I will never purchase any of Andersen products, and the advertising dollars he spends will be wasted attempting to overcome the truth I will tell. As for the welfare of the employees, …
I don't associate or work with people like Andersen and it's their own choice to make, … I'm not the root-cause of misfortune if any, that company suffers.

Guess you would never buy a Ford. Prominent case law about their disregard for human life. I wouldn’t exempt the others, either.

Or that doctors and hospitals are the fourth leading cause of death in the US.

But, hey, let’s do some chest beating about a twerp who carved his initials in a rock.

One is reminded of this Doonesbury comic:

"Bummer of a birthmark, Hal."

Ryan Andersen sure set himself up for a public lashing IMO.

It will not take long to see if his life has changed. His employees will know, his family will know and it is likely that the RV world will learn the truth, whatever it is, over time.

In the interim, my absence from his customer base will continue to remind him that his action had more consequences than the minimal fine associated with closing his case. It is my hope that others offer his workers jobs, mentor his kids with positive encouragement to maintain our public lands and continue to deliver the message that this type of behavior has no place in our society. It is also my hope that his future actions prove he gets it. A small business owner who gives back to our public lands would be a wonderful thing. Pat

Owner of Andersen Hitches vandalizes in Arches NP

A person can feel remorseful for something they did that was unintentional that caused harm to someone else, like driving drunk and causing an accident. Not everyone who drives drunk will feel remorse, but I’m sure there are some who never thought they would hurt anyone, and are sorry when they do.

People who intentionally cheat are not remorseful when caught, although they can act remorseful if that seems like a good tactic to get out of the problem. For example, I doubt that anyone at Volkswagen was remorseful about cheating on the emissions testing. People who don't have a social conscience can be made to conform to societal norms if they feel that the penalties for not conforming are sufficiently severe, and that they will he invoked.

I don't think this is a black or white situation; I think most of us feel that parts of the law are stupid and we ignore them if we think we can get away with it. Examples would include speeding if we think it is safe to do so, drinking at a park or ball game where it is illegal to do so, walking or playing with the dog off leash, building or improving something without checking on the building code, hoping we don't get a ticket for an expired meter or parking somewhere we shouldn't, etc.

Most of these things involve our getting some benefit we wouldn't be able to get without breaking the law. I think the thing that galls us is the pure arrogance of carving one's name into a rock in a protected area. Really, Andersen derived no benefit other than inflating his ego, and that is why many of us would hope that he would be punished sufficiently to decide not to do that again. I very much doubt that he will discover a social conscience that he was previously unaware of, anymore than any of the rest of us will with respect to violations of the law we will continue to do as long as we feel like we can get away with it. If any part of the law is sufficiently important to us as a society, we can find ways to reduce the number of violations. I doubt that the punishment Andersen received was sufficient to alter his behavior, although I’m sure he will be much more careful when he does these things in the future.

Would love to see the look on his face if his products started piling up as returns on the shipping dock, maybe with a chiseled address under an arch.

Slowmover….You are correct. I refuse to buy Ford products until significant changes are made at the BOD level.

McDave… Excellent post. I'll add that another reason to remain critical of Andersen is to send a signal to anyone Else who has such disregard for public property.

Lynnsr… those remarks are really off-the-mark. If you don't like what others say about it,..... you are free to stop visiting this discussion, you know.

So, was hesitant to reply again. But decided to speak my mind anyway......

First let me state that I don’t agree in anyway with what he did, and I Do believe it was an incredibly poor choice that will likely stick with him long after this post dies down, and long after the 18 months. He did the action, and I believe he is paying a price, far more than what the govt sentenced and fined him.

The Christian in me cant help but think at how many people on this thread are judging and acting like they have never done something they have regretted. We all make mistakes, or at least I have never met a perfect person.

We learn and grow, from what we do. We don’t always think before we act, or sometimes we do and it’s just a really bad decision. I’ve made my share, and a few I wish I could go back and NOT make that immature decision.

The people that want to see this guy hang and fry, have you led a perfect life? Do you always make the right call? Are you humble enough to even admit you have not led a perfect life, and made some bad decisions?

He messed up majorly, arrogantly, purposefully. He has been fined, given a sentence, banned, and none of us will know the impact on his business, but it’s likely significant. None of us ever has to buy anything from again, that’s our choice.

But man, doesn’t everyone deserve a chance to grow and learn from their mistakes? If you make one mistake in this world, you are evil forever?

Let’s see what he does as a result of this? We don’t know him and hopefully he will grow and learn from this, become a better person and maybe even help prevent someone else from doing something like this.....

People pick and choose the laws they are going to be self-righteous about. Kind of ironic that a bunch of campers in search of serenity and peace have spun this thread for 50 pages. And those who disagree are told to “take a nap with your hitch”. Very adult lol

Agree - and well put - all we have to do is start talking about guns to get the thread closed and quick! ( that is a joke by the way, sorta)

Very well put,

I wish I could change some of my past decisions for sure. Pre-salvation I was quite the hellion.
Christ changed me, because there is no way I could have done it myself.

I’ll admit I was hard on Ol’ Mr. Anderson, but at some point we gotta put up the torches and pitchforks and go camping.

My guilt over my past transgressions still hurt. It will never end and that's why I try to be a better person. If the Christ forgives him and makes you feel better about your own so that you can forget what you did...then it may work for you and it's a fantastic way to dump guilt... but it has nothing to do with what Andersen did and the fact that no matter how the BLM sand-blasts that arch how it will never be as it was undamaged. It surprises me that those who support capital punishment which has no forgiveness and no error-correction possible and violates "Thou shalt not kill" can claim the "salvation from their sins" for themselves. Convenient.
I'll lay off of it tho'. I realize I'm probably stepping over-the-line.
Kind regards and with sincerity...
