Shower faucet replacement

First - how hard is it to repair the shower faucet? Ours has started not wanting to turn off completely.

Had thought just replacing it would be easier. Has anyone replaced and what did you use for the replacement?

Thanks.

How accessible is the plumbing to the faucet? Is it a single handle operator? Typically the faucet is still good, and just the cartridge needs to be replaced. Pull the cartridge and go to plumbing supply or Loews/HD - they carry a huge assortment of replacement cartridges, even my local mom & pop harware store had replacements for my '74 - pretty standard stuff.

When I had mine out I replaced the washers, worked great after. Does it look like this one?
Or a single handle?

awkward, but accessible

Should have mentioned center bath/rear bed.
It's a single pull-on, rotate for temp faucet. Had thought the cylinder wouldn't be available, but I can try Lowe's first - that would be to easy.
Thanks.

I believe you will find it is a Moen and the cartriges are still available locally .There is also a repair kit available which is a set of o-rings . if it is leaking that's probably all that is wrong , or some dirt . It can be taken out from the front side . Good luck

you can see the valve in this post, next to the sink, where I was replacing all the plumbing.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/240389-post6.html

I had to replace the shower valve due to corrosion, which made the interior too rough for the replacement O-rings. The fit is very tight and you have to install the 3/4" wood block (actually, plywood) between the valve and the fiberglass in order to get the right depth for the handle.

Be sure you buy a "shower only" valve or you will have a short descending length of pipe intended for a tub that cannot be drained and you'll have freeze damage eventually.
