We bought it!

Well we bought the 1986 25" Sovereign! We are really excited so far! Went down to the dealer early on Saturday and looked it over. It is in really good condition inside and the outside had a few nicks and scratches, but ok with us. We followed everyone's advice and checked the floors, what we could see of the frame and everything else that you can check at the dealer. We liked it so we took it home! We are now in the process of making it our own. We did find a small plumbing leak and Kevin is working on fixing that. He is planning on pulling the wheels and checking the brakes and axels this weekend. Hopefully if everything goes ok we will be camping soon. The unit inside is so neat and other than having the carpet replaced it pretty close to original. We did find the original owners book in the unit with a lot of stuff including original Airstream floor plan brouchures for 1985 & 1986. I will see if I can scan them and post them for anyone that wants to see them.
Anyone with suggestions or comments, please chime in, we would love to hear from you

Congrats on the trailer! Looks nice!

I've been researching Airstreams for a while, trying to figure out what I want - I'm really liking that 25' center bath floorplan and the advantages of the mid-80s units (narrow body, front wrap window.) If you get those brochures scanned in, I'd appreciate seeing them.

Keep us all informed as you go through the trailer and enjoy it!

Coffeydelsol,
CONGRATULATIONS
I assume you were able to get the awning down.

We have an '87 and love it. The mid to late '80s seem to be very strong coaches. If you get a chance compare the amount of rivets in a rivet line to a more modern Airstream and you will see what I mean.

Please scan the brochures and post them here or the links to them.

We also found brochures for our 1987 and they can be seen here...

1987 Product Brochure

1987 Features and Floor Plans Brochure

Have fun making the coach your own and get out there camping

Nice looking unit!!!
Welcome to the forums. Keep an eye out for rallies in your area and if you are travellling into SW U.S. check the forum to see if there are any rallies in that you are travelling. You will get many good years out of that unit.

Update!

Kevin pulled the tires/wheels off the unit this weekend with the help of his dad. He was really happy the axel looked good, the bearings were fine (he cleaned and repack them). The only problems he found, were that one of the brakes was "froze up", another the wire was broken, and a third the brake had become dislodged and was not working. He has basically fixed those issues and will be able to button it back up when we can locate a little C shapped clip that holds the magnet up. Local auto parts store did not have and our TT stores were closed. Hoping to take it next weekend camping to see what is what with it. While they were working on it, (they had to do it in the parking lot where I work) a couple of guys pulled up in an SUV - turns out they were Airstreamers too! They wished us well with the new purchase and were telling us about some Airstream only camp grounds etc. Funny how just owning one makes us part of a club! Will keep everyone posted as we go!

We just adopted an "86 Sovereign 31'. I would love to hear from you ... what you learned & what you did. Things seem good, normal neglect seams to be the biggest issue with our A.S. .

Wow it has been awhile since I posted, we did not have very many problems with ours, whoever owned it took really good care of it. We have had it for 2-1/2 years and the things we had to fix were the thermostat switch on the A/C, the water connector to hose part split and Kevin fixed with JB Weld, that is going to have to be replaced someday. We replaced the fridge with a regular electric fridge, the freezer worked great, but the fridge did not stay cool enough. We do not dry camp so it has not been a problem. Also something is wrong with the backflow something or other, it allows the fresh water tank to fill while it is hooked to the hose. We have not run that down yet.
We have put the Airstream at the hunt camp up in GA and purchased another TT to camp in this year. We have custody of our 2 granddaughters while their mom is deployed and the Airstream was a little small with 2 kids, 2 dogs and us. We will probably go back to the Airstream when we are not camping with kids. The new TT does the job, but it does not give me the cozy feeling when camping that the Airsteam does. Hope you enjoy your new home away from home.
