One thing is blow the spiders out of the burner with a can of dust off. If there are webs in there they will cause your wiring to get burned.

Good general info here,

Do you know what a learning experience is? A learning experience is one of those things that says "You know that thing that you just did? Don't do that."

Be prepared for your smoke detector to go off. Ours went off the first 2 times we used the furnace. Scared the you know what out of me but I guess it was a good test of the smoke detector.

I'd suggest opening windows since there may be a little smell from dust burning off. Not terrible but good airflow through windows or vent fans a good idea.

But to answer your question, "the best practice procure for making sure your heat is working correctly", turn it on. See if it blows hot air.
