32' Excella tow vehicle

Hi all!
Just bought my 32'excella 1000.. Very happy about it but I don't think my 2000 escalade will tow it. I have no problem buying a new vehicle to tow it, but I'm having problems figuring out what will do the job. I'm told the trailer weighs between 6400 and 8600 lbs..

One of the more contentious issues on the forum. If you use the "search" function at the top of the page you will have days of reading pleasure to look forward to.

There is no general consensus other than "Yugos" make poor tow vehicles.

I tow a 31' foot Sovereign with a Nissan Titan and have had no complaints.

Others will differ...

have you picked up the Excella yet? where is it, now? a good first stop might be the CAT Scale at Exit 23 of the NYS Thruway.

would be $10 well spent to unhitch it so it is alone on the trailer platform, and move your Escalade forward to measure your axles separately. then you know what you're dealing with! for an extra $1, you could move the tongue off the trailer platform and know those weights, too!

if you search the forums, there's at least one or two excellent threads on weighing your rig.

The suggestion to weigh the trailer is a good one. We have a 87, 32 ft Excella. But I have only towed it with our 2500 diesel pickup. I guess you have checked the tow ratings for your Escalade? I have not weighed our trailer either. We like the trailer a whole lot. We spend 3 months a year in it but only pull it a few hundred miles a year.

A 3/4 ton pickup or (used) SUV (they don't make new 3/4 ton SUVs to my knowledge) would do a nice job. A diesel even better. Especially since you live in NY where you have lots of hills. But yep, lots of folks tow with less. Tons of threads on here about this. Enjoy your new trailer.

We had a 1500. We went to a 2500HD. Made ALL the difference. The Durmax doesn't even know the AS is back there.

I'm towing a 93 Excella 30 with a Ford Expedition 5.4 with a tow package. The empty weight starts without a toothbrush so you need to know what you will pour into the trailer and what the capacity of your tow vehicle will handle. Rule of thumb is 80% of capacity makes for an enjoyable tow, over that and your vehicle will struggle in the wind, over hill and dale etc. Remember airstream weighs trailers with empty propane tanks so add that weight to everything, total and tongue weight.

They say my truck is only rated for 7k.. so I guess that takes it out of the running.. I guess I'll have to move up to a 2500. Hills are gonna be an issue and I'd rather have to much truck than too much trailer! Heh heh.. the trailer is already home. I used my brothers 2500, otherwise the scale idea would have been great..! thanks for all the info and thoughts.

We pull our 32' with a Duramax Diesel. Can't tell it is back there. We also have Expedition and I can tell it is back there. Going to weigh it on Thursday to see exactly how much stuff we have in there. Then maybe I can convince HIM to take some of it out. However, all of my stuff is important and needs to stay. LOL

Good Afternoon from Floyd County Virginia! We used to tow with an F-150...However, we got caught up in a storm coming back from Virginia Beach and coming up hill was scary. The truck was being (or felt like?) pushed backwards and I had a heck of a time maintaining 45 never mind the 65 MPH speed limit. We had all kinds of trouble after that and my Wife told me to start looking for a bigger truck but there was one condition. It had to be at least a Lariat package or better. She was very vocal on this too. Of course I tried to talk her out of it, (Right!) but she kept insisting. So we ended up with a 2015 F-250 with the King Ranch package and I have to fight her to drive it. No!!! It is my turn!

Hello!! We live just West of you... We tow our 1989 32' Excella with an F-250/6.2 gasser. We don't have any problems, although a diesel would pull better, they have their own trade offs. Our trailer loaded ready to go weighs 7450lbs. We had everything weighed at the stone quarry in Howes Cave for no charge... Good luck and safe travels!!

Well shucks, I never even saw the date of it. Oh well, comment still stands though. I much prefer my F-250 to the 150 we had been using.

I did actually! I bought a sierra denali with the 6.2.. it has the trailer package and it goes the excella perfectly!!
