Who are buying Airstreams?

Hello folks,

Who (age, etc.) are buying Airstreams?
What type of tow vehicle do I need to pull this trailer?
What types of hitches are available?

These are the top questions that most new potential buyers of Airstream travel trailers ask.

Over the years I have taken 600+ photographs of my customers right before they are about to leave our facility to enjoy the lifestyle and experience of a new or preowned Airstream travel trailer or motor home.

If anyone is interested in viewing the photos please visit my customer page.

Colonial is Great

We bought 2 airstreams from Colonial. The first was a 16 footer and although we had a great time camping in it we found we needed more room. So David, Patrick and Loren got us into a 25 footer without any sales drama and at a very reasonable cost. They are extremely good at what they do: giving great deals on Airstreams. I can absolutely say they are honest, dependable and they definately don't forget you when you drive out of the lot. Sorry to give a testimonial here, but they don't sell all these airstreams by accident. Gene and Laura

-We are both 58 years old. We bought our '05 Safari 25FB new about 2 years ago.
-We pull our girl, Lucy, with Olivia, an '05 Suburban 2500 4x4x4.
-We use a Hensley Arrow hitch system. It costs a bunch ($3000) but it is worth every penny. I would not pull Lucy with anything else.

I didn't buy...

Not because I didn't want to. I simply found another of my interests close to home.

Trailer: 1949 Spartan
Vehicle: 2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab
Age: 39
No hitch setup as I haven't towed. yet. (A full redesign is commencing the first of the year.)

Patrick,

It's fun looking through the pics of everyone with the "look what I just bought" painted on their faces. It's also interesting seeing so much demographic information with just one pic. A lot of us list a lot of info about ourselves and our rigs on the forum here, but with your gallery you can see it all.

I often look through the polls to see who is buying and what their ages are, what they spent and so on, but sometimes with some of the polls only a small percentage of the members here actually respond and I don't think this necessarily gives you accurate percentages of the population.

I noticed tonight after logging in that Airstream has posted a link for their customer survey. Do you think they would be willing to share this information with the forum, or is it something they would rather keep to themselves for proprietary reasons?

Brent

Oh I must have misunderstood. I thought because you said you had one on your lot for a year and haven't sold it and you wanted to consign rather than trade that you weren't interested in trading. Sorry for the misunderstanding at my end........

Just to lower your average age a little....

I was 23 when I bought my airstream, almost 6 years ago (a '76...couple years older than I am)

Tow with a 2004, 2500 Dodge Ram Diesel

We thought about buying a new RV this year, but I just couldn't part with "Blinky". So we are remodeling her instead.

Hey Patrick,
Great site Colonial A/S and the best damn photo spread out there ( MotherShip can't even compare). You guys do it justice.

Old enough to have heard Sputnik (well, at least one of us...), F250 Diesel 6.0, Lariat Crew Cab (short-bed). We use the Equilizer hitch and it's been peachy-keen!

A note from a suppliers point of view.

I was the Vice President of Hensley Mfg. for over ten years and Colonial Airstream is one of the top dealers in the entire country.

Suppliers hear a lot about dealers from customers and I've never once heard of anyone having a bad experience with Colonial.

Retired, over 65. Been boondocking for more than 35 years using just about every kind of RV out there. We decided the AS was the best TT so here we are and we don't need a stinken Hensley.

Certainly not! Now that there is a more advanced design out there no one does.

They really don't smell all that bad though.

36yr old guy,
Los Angeles
Just bought a brand new 17' Safari Sport Airstream and am Crazy about it.
Towing it with my V6 Jeep commander without any trouble (this size Airstream was designed and manufactured for smaller SUV's and for people like me who dont have lots of cash). It was pretty affordable.
Not sure of the towing system..the dealership hooked me up with a good one though as part of the deal.

nice website patrick b'

for ne1 interested in sorting out a/s ownership and trailer size and towing rig trends...

there are a dozen polls in the 'community polls' section with info on tv, length, age, camping style, brake controller, breed of dog and so on...

it's fun to look at the customer/rig pics on colonial's website...

especially since i RECOGNIZE about 10-12 of those folks from here and camping!

most of the rigs look well matched,

a few are not.

the vw vanagon with a new 25 safari might be a reach.

and a couple of the older rover discos look wacky too.

but the variety of ages, genders, ethnicity, shapes and sizes... yet ALL SMILING is cool.

the staff pics are nice. family run, but a BIG crew.

check it out folks.
