Airstream just released a new Sport trailer. Unlike the 17' & 22' previous Sport models it is 8’ wide and features an aluminum interior skin.

took the tour last tuesday... Don said they were at about 20 units/mnth.. up from 9 a couple months ago

Checked out a sport... very cool, very tiny... I could imagine towing that with a compact

Now only if they would do that same floor plan in the 17' and make the bed just a little wider, like my Casita, that would be perfect...

Nice layout, but it would be more workable if it were a foot longer to accommodate for a wider bed. This is still the same tight 48-inch bed as in most layouts. AS labels it as a double (full) bed, but a true double is actually 54 inches wide (still tight, IMO). It's a very nice AS, though, with the interior aluminum skin, pano window and SMEV appliances.

Funny how looking at a shiny new trailer temporarily (?) squashes the vintage bug I thought I'd been bitten by. Shoo fly, don't bother me....

This seems like a good idea by Airstream. We bought a Sport 17 two years ago as a way to try the Airstream experience. Made several trips, some long, some short. My biggest dis-like was the couch/bed combination. My biggest like was the rear bath. So now we camp in a 2008 Safari 23 FB. But I really like the small sub-20 models and this seems to combine the Bambi 16 and the Sport 17 pretty well. We would have probably bought this if it was around when we were looking.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on what Airstream is producing, Patrick. Your website is definitely a better resource than the factory's.

It would be most useful if you could post the actual weight from a local scale of the trailers you have (with battery and propane tanks full but not water tank). The ones you stock seem to have the most popular options and would reflect the true weight which one could subtract from the GVWR to get carrying capacity.

The only thing I didn't like was the combo black/gray water tank.

Hi Ken, I haven't noticed any differences to speak of regarding frame or skin, but I'm certainly no expert. We were happy with the construction of the Sport and we are happy with the way the Safari is built. I do remember being concerned about the very low ground clearance on the Sport 17, I think I posted some comments about that.

On our trip to New Mexico and back we spent 13 nights on the road, covered 3500 miles, and found that the Safari 23 is just about perfect for us. We got the good rear bathroom, a decent bed up front, and enough storage to keep us comfortable. In fact, we are talking about ANOTHER trip to New Mexico later this month or early November.

OK, back to the Sport / Safari comparison. I think the 2007 Sport was a very good "first" airstream, good for weekends, good if you don't have a large tow vehicle. The Safari 23 is more suitable for longer duration trips, but not right for full-time, at least for us. Of course neither is a problem to tow if you have a truck or larger suv.

Remember, as I've said before, we don't have kids and very seldom cook or spend much time inside. We usually stay away most of the day hiking or riding bikes, or something, and show up about nightfall and crash, to sleep early, and up early. Either trailer works well for that camping style.

Back on topic though, this new little guy really appeals to me, for some reason I just like the smaller trailers. I am looking forward to seeing one of these sometime soon.

Picking up our 16 sport on Friday. We are really excited after talking about it for 3 months.

Has anyone else purchased a 16 sport? Are you happy with it?

Picked up our sport 16 last Friday and could not be happier, just waiting to take it on its maiden voyage! Love everything about it.

I like those cabinets especially, on the sport units. I like that they now have the panaramic windows and more windows.

The one thing I don't care for and I have also seen it done on the 25'Classic FB is to attach the microwaves under the cabinet and in the case of the 25' it is mounted over the window in the galley. Here in the sport, the burners fold away to give a sleek counter top and an invisible appearance and then place a large appliance looming over the counter. I have trouble believing that the addition of the microwaves thusly are selling points for Airstreams. Airstream what are you thinking?
