Just Purchased 1964 22' Safari

All,

Just purchased a buddy for my 1963 19' Globe Trotter.

This 1964 22' Safari has been parked down the street from my Inlaw's home for 8 years. I've asked the owner to buy it for years and she didn;t want to let it go. Owner has used it to store antiques from her business.

I saw owner in her driveway and walked over with some cash in hand and after some back and forth she finally sold it to me.

Exterior has some dents and one of the vents has a leak so they tarped it last year. Good axles and tires. Tows great.
Solid pull out step and floors are all solid. Totally gutted inside and all original aluminum skin/walls are intact with electrical outlets and some of the light fixtures. All windows and hardware/vents in good condition.

Owner will have it emptied by April 2nd and I'll bring it home!

Good find. All vintage Airstreams need a vintage buddy to hang with. Good luck and keep us posted.

Mine was built in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Were was yours born?

Welcome Aboard...👍

Hi....

I will say from experience....That axle WILL need replacement.

Too much of the tire is hidden behind the wheelhouse.
Consider replacing those wheels also.

Good save!

We too have vintage buddies. 61 Globe and 62 Ambsdr. Between the two we maybe have one mediocre trailer but we love them both and camp in them.

You won't need another project for a while! Keep us posted on progress with lots of pics. Agree you need new axle. Our project is posted as Jim + Jane's '67 Safari.

Thanks everyone - I pick the trailer up tomorrow morning and bring it home.
They are saying we will be in a "Shelter in Place" situation here in Seattle starting Friday due to the CV so at least I'll have a small project to tinker with while staying close to home.

I wish everyone good health and hope this CV outbreak tones down soon

All the best!

Thx! - I was told these models with the larger jalousie window to the right of the door are called the Safari "Californian" model?
Is this correct - And how many were built like this as I don't see many out there.

To the right of the door, below the jalousie windows is a logo and a data plate.
The logo indicates the model "Safari" and the data plate will indicate where it was built. I.E. Santa Fe Springs, CA. That is where mine was born in 1964.

The large double jalousie windows are pretty rare and I have only seen one other, yours! Where was your trailer built?

I have never this particular Safari floor plan called a "Californian" model. It is one of several different 1964 22' Safari floor plans that were built at both plants. This floor plan was built in both plants, not just California, though without production numbers available, it is possible (but not "prove"-able) that more of this floor plan may have been built in California than Ohio. California also built other 22' Safari floor plans in 1964, so not all were like this example.

As for rareness, this was a "1964 only" floorplan, and since it was not the only 1964 22' Safari floor plan, it is somewhat rare in the larger population of 22' Safaris of all years. It is not currently known if this floor plan represents a minority or majority of the 1964 Safaris built.

here is the photo of the serial# plate - looks like it was actually built in 8/1963 according to the "6308" stamp but titled 1964

since photo is not the best and for better clarity - the #'s on plate are as follows:

0 2241 S 3062
6308

**would appreciate some feedback on serial# info - where built/etc

California 1964 Airstream production began in August 1963 and began at the serial number ending in "001". You have the 62nd California built 22' Safari according to the serial number ending in "062", but in reality it was much earlier than the 62nd unit built. According to Airstream production records, O2241S3062 was completed on 8/30/1963, but for some unknown reason a lot of 1964 Safaris were built well out of serial number order. Quite a few of the lower serial number 1964 Safari's were actually built as late as October 1964.

As a side note, the serial number format of early 1964 California Airstreams changed several times and with the units not built in serial number order, it is hard to put a decoder together to make sense of it all. A lower serial number unit can have a "later" serial number format, while a higher serial number unit might have an "earlier" serial number format". This seems to all have settled out by serial number "065" or so.

Great find. Nice purchasing strategy coming with cash in hand.

We have two vintage Airstreams also, a 66 Tradewind and a 95 Excella 34’. They look kind of different though. My build threads are Dan’s 66 Tradewind Improvements and Dan’s 95 Excella Makeover.
