Hey Nick,

I also have a 64 Safari and have just started the refurb. From the looks of the pics TinLoaf posted, we have exactly the same trailer.

I had planned on stripping the Zolatone until discovering the fiberglass end caps. Are you planning on replacing the fiberglass with aluminum panels or repainting the interior? I hear a shiny silver interior calling me, I'm just not sure how to deal with the fiberglass.

Thanks and good luck,

Dave

Dave,

It's possible you guys got it from the same person. Check your floor and frame for sure on these old models.

We are going to do something different with the fiberglass endcaps. Lowes sells this stuff that is made to paint your appliances to look like stainless steel. That was our first idea...but after looking at it we might just paint the endcap a neat color. I think it will really set the whole interior off. The bathroom end is going to all match also since that endcap is much bigger than the front endcap.

Let me warn you about what you are getting into when you strip that paint. My wife sure thinks it was worth stripping the paint....but she only helped me one night. I had another friend helping me and he hated it and complained about it alot. I spent about 4 times the time that either of them spent stripping. Its ALOT of work. In the end I'm glad I did it, but its alot of work. After you strip it then you have to polish it. Thats not going to happen for me until at least next year. Good luck...I learned alot so far...if you have any questions I can help you out.

Hey Nick,

Want to help me strip my interior panels? No fiberglass!

Also, the website I wanted to show you is here Vintage Trailering. David Winick is who owns the site and does the work on the trailers. Amazing work, and you can see what silver walls and zolatoned encaps will look like if you look at his past projects page on the 68 Caravel.

See you tomorrow.

Steve

I have been doing quite a bit with the trailer. The most recent thing is installing a new water heater. I purchased a 6 Gallon Suburban Gas Electric Direct Spark water heater on eBay for $300 including shipping. I am trying to install it ans still use the Bowen vent. I think I pretty much have it all worked out. I will post pictures when I'm done

64 Safari

01,

A belated congratulations, I just ran across your thread. Sounds and looks like you're making good progress. We've got a '64 Safari as well and considered stripping the interior to bright aluminum, but ultimately just repainted. It sounds like you're starting with a more solid structure, than we did (that's a good thing). My wife and son put together a website for ours. Don't know if it would give you any ideas, but it's: 64airstream.com

Keep the updates coming and good luck (but more important - have fun).

Water Heater

By the way, we used the same model water heater and with some minimal (hidden) sheet metal cuts reused the original Bowen cover.

Super Thread, especially since I am very actively looking for a '64 Safari Twin. Any new pics since end of August? I would love to see them!

Smile No Pictures yet but I've got curtains

I went to the unofficial Memorial Day Rally at Rend Lake, IL. I ended up having to tape up pillow cases and sleeping bags to get some privacy and block light. It looked pretty bad and a little like the bad kind of trailer trash. So I was dead set on making new curtains for the trailer. I spent a better part of the weekend working on them and they are finished. I will post pictures a little later along with more progress on my trailer. This was some tedious work.

Nick:

Good to hear from you. Since I posted back in October I found and bought our '64. There are several of us on the Forums. Please do post some pictures when you get a chance. I have updated polishing photos on my blog, but here is one for good measure.

Cheers!
-Tim

Allright....so here are some newer pictures...I took about six months off because of some family things. So here are the curtains I worked on this past weekend. I still need to press them so they hang right and aren't wrinkled. They have a sewn in liner and velcro so they attach in the middle and also velcro to the trailer on the sies of the window. The sliiders are blind stitched to the back of the top of the curtains. Let me know what you think?????

I did some of the things that 64Airstream did with the water heater. Here are some pictures. I wanted to maintain the original look from the outside so I used some scrap aluminum and, with help, made it fit.

Now the toilet

I realllllllly wanted to make the original toilet work, but I couldn't. so before the last camping trip I worked trough the night installing an Aqua Magic V. I had to cut out around the toilet to fit it in. My plan is to use fiberglass and fill in the blank parts and see if I can make it look likt it is supposed to be there. We will see....here are three pictures of the toilet.

I also threw in a picture of the new electric setup. Come to find out the electrical setup was low voltage, but it was low voltage AC. The Fantastic Fan I installed REALLY didn't like low voltage AC so it had to be converted to DC.

I installed a new skylight, which is when I found out that a tree had fallen on the trailer at some point. It took alot of work to straighten everything out and get the skylight installed and for it to look the way it does.

I also put in a new counter top...this was way easy and pretty cheap.
