refrigerator fans

I know there is at least one thread on this topic but it is old and inactive. I just bought my 2001 Bambi and the exterior fan on the refer was frozen. I got the new improved version from RVcoolingunitwarehouse and installed their "lower temp" switch in the original location. Refer works fine but the fan never comes on unless I jump the switch. It seems like with the switch mounted to the exterior of the insulated compartment it is only going to come on at very high ambient temps. Has anyone experimented with mounting the switch to the tube fins or strapping it to one of the pipes? I also added a smaller fan (out of my old power converter) to bring air up from the lower compartment. The top of the enclosure gets really warm and it seems like the fans would help if they would only come on. Airstream really should have made the top vent a few inches higher.

With mine it's mounted to the tubing with a hose clamp. It's the original way it came from Airstream and the way the manual shows it mounted in my schematics. I've never seen one mounted anywhere else. Upper righthand side wher it first exits the back of the fridge - it's hottest location.

Here is a photo showing the two fans and the switch. Upper fan is a direct replacement of the original, lower fan is my addition. The switch is visible at upper right in the location where I found it, screwed and epoxied to the outer insulation. It looks original, but to my untrained eye it also looks pretty stupid. I replaced it before I thought about moving it, but where is the best place to move it?

Mine, which is original to the unit, is held on the tubing where it is un-finned by a metal hose clamp. Right where it exits the insulation and backing to the fridge.

Update: I had the trailer out of the barn to test the plumbing before I winterize, so I did a refrigerator test as well. The ambient temp was 80*F at the start. I put a sixpack of beer in the bottom compartment and a 20oz. water in the freezer and set the thermostat to MAX. In 24hrs. the water was frozen solid at 6*F, the beer had ice in it at 25*F and the external fans never came on. I ended the test at that point. The refrigerator is working fine on propane and the beer was not damaged. I will try a similar test on 110VAC soon.

A 6 pack of beer in my fridge would never hang around long enough to freeze no matter what the temp!

I say we convene a meeting of The Airstream Owners Beer Preservation And Refrigeration Testing Society, and take measures to prevent such haphazard endangerment of beers in the future!
