Found a '68 22' Safari
I've been looking for a used Airstream for about 5 years. Found a 68 22' Safari four miles down the road in Axtell Texas. Who knew? Came from Indiana. I will be going through it and finding out what works and what doesn't and fixing, repairing, replacing. I'm not going to restore to original. I want a camper that shines and I can use and says "Airstream." I have carpentry tools, some aircraft tools, a toilet plunger, and little electrical knowledge so I will be counting on this forum for lots of help
Computer challenged so pictures may be a while in getting posted (but I have a lot of them). I just realized I can tell my wife that the Airstream is a perfect cat carrier so I can take our critter to the vet! Sometimes, one has to stretch.

Cost Accounting Technique
You will want to keep track of all the $$ you spend on your project.
But just as you want your wife to think it's all worth it because it's really a kitty carrier, you will want to protect her from knowing just how expensive her kitty carrier really is.
So, in your checkbook register, indicate "Animal Humane Society of Texas" for all Airstream purchases.
You will be able to quickly tally your expenses.
She will love your refreshing, new philanthropic attitude.
Welcome aboard.
Happy Trails

Congratulations, and welcome to the forum!! Trailer #2 of ours (out of 3) is a 1967 Safari. I love that layout. We're doing the same thing, customizing it completely to our tastes. Lots of work, but well worth it in the end. As soon as you figure out the picture-thing, be sure to post... people here LOVE pictures!!!

Thanks for the insight and creative advice. Sounds like you've been there/done that. I like the Orwell quote.

Wow! A '67! That's almost the same. So you know the trailer/camper/beast quite well. I've got (no name for her/him/it) parked in the front yard and what a beautiful site to see that aluminum glow in the moonlight. And then morning comes and I realize all the work to be done. But, that is also a part of the joy and I have lots of time to work/play/experiment. And I will get pictures. And you have 3! Must be addictive. Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome from down the road a bit. 22' Safaris are one of my favorite trailers. Every question you may have has probably been asked and answered here on the forums. It is the greatest resource on the net in my opinion. Good luck with your refurb!

Thanks, Lance. It's nice to have a Texas connection and one almost within "walking" distance. The big question is where to start. Right now, it seems overwhelming, but, every journey begins with the first step and we've already taken that. I am pretty much a "hands-on" learner and get best results if I can actually see it done and help do it. My wife just told me that this Airstream sold for more money than I actually made during my first year's salary in 1968. In perspective, I was very much underpaid or this baby was EXPENSIVE!

Welcome an congrats! The Safari is our favorite. Good advice to keep all of your receipts for "agreed value" with your insurance company. If you are lucky the floors will be solid. That would save a ton of work. If not there is lots of help in this forum. Best of luck and happy fixin.

Welcome Skywriter. We are in the same interesting situation, having acquired our '67 Safari 22' about 10 days ago. So much to be done! I solved the issue with my wife by putting the title in her name and telling her it's a birthday present.
Electrical was our starting point and find the folks in that forum quite helpful.

The aluminum addiction begins, congratulations, now you have something to consume all of extra time you thought you didn't have before:-) Hope you have a good computer so when you are done working on the trailer each day you can spend your nights on the forums, no more wasting time sleeping either:-)
Always like pictures, it is fun watching everyone's progress, it is what keeps all of our renovations going!
