Clear coat problem

Hello all,

My partner and I are currently trying to strip the clear coat from her new 1967 Safari and we ran into a problem. She bought rustoleum aircraft stripper because we saw in a YouTube video that it worked wonders. She slathered a 6’ long section with the stuff and the directions say to wait 45 minutes until removal. We waited the 45, but when we went to take it off, it had stained the aluminum orange. Do any of you know the best/fastest way to strip the clear coat? Also, does anyone have an idea of how to remove the stain? I tried to attach a picture, but the image is too large for the app that I am using. I will try to post from a computer later.

Thanks in advance,
C

Howdy Rivera, welcome to Air Forums.
I used RemovALL on our '67 Safari to strip old clearcoat with fairly good result but that product is no longer available. Vintage Trailer Supply can be helpful in technical issues and these days they sell PPG Aerospace PR-5044 Peroxide Activated Stripper, but naturally they have none in stock. They note that leaving stripper on the trailer in the sun will cause bleaching and others say it can cause a yellow tint. All PR-5044 reviews on the VTS site are positive.

Check out the stripper threads of Air Forums for Exterior Restoration for plenty of opinions. I have not seen a comparison of PR-5044 with Rustoleum Aircraft Stripper.

Best wishes!
Jim
