NewBie Question

Hi- We're new to this forum & to Airstreams & will be taking possession of a pristine/mint 66 Safari. A couple of questions- The front table does not fold down to make a bed , should this table fold down, I have experience with other RVs whose front table would fold down to form a twin bed....should this table fold down? How many leaves should the table have? & Has anyone replaced the Glass windows with a aftermarket,more durable window? The entire trailer has been updated & its onll flaw is that the old toilet leaked & the owner replaced it with a newer style. We need one left side front running light , and the rear vent fan does not work. We can't wait to go to the Rallies & learn more. Thanks to everyone

Welcome to the forum! I don't know about the vintage units, but the newer ones do fold down.

check my posts on using lexan.

We had a broken window, the worse ones to replace: front curve window.
We did it while on the road, so anybody can do it.

It won't break and most certainly will last for ever. And it's cheap.

The clear Lexan may or may not stay clear for ever. We chose the smoked one, so it's great for summer camping.

First off, welcome to the forum Chitown AirStreamers! You will find a wealth of knowledge here that should be helpful along the way during your "getting to know your trailer" stage.

In answer to your table question, yes, I believe the tabletop/dinette should make into a bed. I've never seen one that didn't, unless of course, it is an aftermarket put in by a PO, then anything goes! Good luck!

So the table should fold down?! This one on the Trailer we looked at would not... nice trailer though. Do you know if original tables had leaves?

On the VintageAirstream.com's archives there is a '66 Safari with what appears to be an original table. Is this at all like yours?

Some of the older ones had leaves (late 50's mostly), others had piano hinge fold-up tables, some had free-standing folding tables (like our '64, it's dual height dining/coffee table). They really varied year to year...

Regardless, if the table is "attached" there is a variety of table hardware available that could enable you to modify it to fold down. I'm actually building a dinette as we speak...I'll post photos when it's done.

Thats what my wife said also. We have two small kids & I would like one big bed up front. Where would I get these hinges?

Welcome to the forum.

There were several different layouts. Do you have a Goucho style with the table attached to the street side wall or do you have dinette style?

Most of the goucho styles the table fold to the wall. The Sofa will vary. Some you simply remove the rear cushion and it forms a double like our 59. Some the base of the sofa pulls out to form a double.

If it's a Dinette style then the table top should be the correct size to span the seating area.

Now there is always the "PO" (Previous Owner) factor. They may have permently fastend the table to the wall and made it non movable.

The PO of our unit butchered up our table. We will be rebuilding it back into it's original form. Ours had two leafs and extended out a good ways from the street side wall. One leaf was permently mounted to the Curb side wall and the other leafe permently mounted next to the stove. The original design was to allow 2-3 to sit on the sofa and 2 folding chairs on the other side. We like the syle because with the table folded it will give the kids some open play space on the floor if the weather makes outside activitys not possible.

We got our dinette hardware at Nolan RV. They have a store here in Denver (it looks like in IL too, but not Chicago proper), but they'll ship anywhere, if there's not one close to you.

We are using the Perko removable brackets and the adjustable leg. Good luck!
