What is the exterior height of a Safari with a thermoderm AC unit? Guesstamints are fine. I need to know if I'll clear my gate header beam.

Just as a reference, my '03 Bambi is a bit more than 9.5' tall with the A/C. Keep in mind that the Penguin A/C unit is a bit more lower profile, so I would guess between 9-10' might be a good guesstimate.

Hey are you all going to be able to make the midwest rally? It's going to be pretty informal and from what I gather other children there as well. I think we are up to 7 or 8 campsites now.

I see that you tow with a Caprice..I have a 96 Impala SS with the Heavy duty 9c1 springs & shocks. What is the MAX that you can tow with your setup? Do you have an airbag system?

All B-body cars '94 through '96 have airbags.

The Impala SS is rated at 2500lbs.

The Caprice w/tow package can tow 5000lbs.

The Impas SS can also tow 5000lbs since in reality it is the same car. The only reason GM rates the Caprice w/tow package more than the Impala SS is due to the mechanical fan setup. It is the only difference as to why the tow ratings are off.

There are other differences between the two, but if you belong to theherd.com or impalassforum.com you will find that there are many Impala SSs towing even a bit beyond 5000lbs. I would not recommend it, but there are some that tow upwards of 6000lbs with the Impala SS.

If you do tow, I would upgrade the trans cooler. The 3.08 gears should be OK, but really, the 3.42s or 3.73s would be a bit better, but would require you to have your PCM re-programmed.

I almost forgot, I would also get the hypertech 160 degree thermostat regardless if you tow with it or not. When towing my 4600lb gross Bambi, the car barely got over 185 degrees.

As far as AirBags- I meant the AirBag spring/shock setup that some guys use for towing. I beleive I would have to change the wheel tire combo, because the stock 17' on the impala -probably could'nt handle the weight. What kind of hitch do you have? would I have to get a higher hitch?

Hey Chitown,

I PM'd you back. I don't use air bags in the suspention. I found that the Moog cargo coils work well. You WILL however need a weight distribution hitch set for the car. There are many opinions on it, however, I went with the Reese setup. It costs about 8-900 installed, but as the others can attest, most any weight distribution levels out the car to an almost stock stance. The springs with the weight bars should be just fine, but they won't be without the weight bars, nor were cargo coils alone.

Also don't for get the brake controller. There are also opinions on that too, but the one I tried was the Prodigy. Works like a dream.
