Just got back from Montana...the fire camp was located in the small town of Colstrip. The fire started on Northern Cheyenee Indian Reservation and burned to the east toward the Custer National Forest...thru the small town of Ashland, where 23 homes were lost.
The town of Colstrip got its name from its coal burning power plant and the coal mines in the area.
On my drive back to Billings airport, I stopped at the Little Bighorn memorial, (National Park Service). The Memorial is just off the I-90 hwy on the Crow Indian Reservation. Across from the memorial..the Crow Tribe operates a Trading Post, gas station, RV park, and Casino. So, it looks like a good place to park your Airstream, and spent the full day hiking around Custer's last stand.

Deb and Tony, from Iowa, who we camped with last year in South Lake Tahoe. Are here at our house...they are camping in our back yard, in Rita. So, on Friday we took them out on Shasta Lake, for a boat ride.
After getting off the Lake, we went to "Friday Nite in the Park". The band was Rock Bottom...they played rock from the 70's & 80's. For me, its like going to a class reunion...seeing many old friends from High School. Its nice to be home.

Deb and Tony left last Monday, to fly back to Iowa... I think they had a great time staying in Rita in our back yard. On their last day in California, the girls went shopping, and Tony & I played golf in the AM. In the afternoon we drove out to French Gulch to show them the oldest bar in Shasta County, E. Frank & CO. Est 1867, and also stopped by one of my old swiming holes from the 1960's...Clear Creek County Park. They want us to come out to Iowa next summer and stay with them...we will see?

More pics from Tony and Deb's stay....not sure why, but I can only post two photos at a time? Tony & Deb at Clear Creek Park, and The Bunny sitting on the back porch at E. Frank & CO.

I just got back from another fire assignment...this time I was stationed on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The Incident Command Post was located at St. Francis High School. I stayed in my 60 sec. tent for only the first night...the rest of my 13 days; the sleeping arrangements were setup in the classrooms. I have some travel photos of some the areas I would love to return to someday; with The Bunny, our Airstream, and my Harley! Can you say…STURGIS!!!! It starts Monday August 6th.

On my return trip from Rosebud, I had the opportunity to drive thru the Black Hills National Forest. I stopped at Mount Rushmore, and had lunch there. Also drove past Crazy horse & the Flintstones "Bedrock City RV Park" in Custer, Plus I almost hit some Bighorn sheep just outside of the town of Bighorn…trust me! When you see the caution signs telling you to slow down because it’s a sheep crossing area, do so!!!
I was feeling sorry for myself because I didn’t have my Harley, until I got to the town of Deadwood; it started raining so hard that I had to pull over in my rental car! Felt sorry for the folks on their Harley’s. There were mud slides across the highway! And so much water on the road, it made it unsafe to pass slower traffic, between Deadwood and Sturgis.
My last stop was in Sturgis… I stayed long enough to buy a T-shirt, (for The Bunny & I)… pick-up a map of the town & event, and use the restroom. Finally got to my motel room in Rapid City at 7:00 pm, parked my rental, and called for a taxi to take me to the Firehouse Brewery for Dinner.
I was surprised to see that the street, in front of the Brewery, closed to traffic and filled with hundreds of people, drinking beer and listening to live Rock Music. I felt like I was having a “Forest Gump” moment! The music was loud, dinner was good, and the Beer at the Brewery was just O.K.
6:00 am the next morning, I returned my rental, and flew-out, thru Denver, SFO, and finally Redding CA. It’s nice to be home…@ Cabana Central.

Rex. Hope all is well. Got detoured around Shasta last week as I5 was closed due to fires. Glad we weren't towing. The detour was rough with stop and go's with ALL the semi's. Smelled lots of burnt brakes and tranny's.
We were off to pick up our daughter from a summer program in Pasadena.

Hey Mr. M…
That is the Salt Fire next to Interstate 5…I think it started at the Salt Cr/Gilman Road exit. That is my old Battalion on and around Shasta Lake, when I was working full time. Looks like the temps will hit 108 this weekend in the greater Redding area. So, I don’t think that will be the last fire we see this summer.
Also the Chips Fire on the Plumas National Forest looks like it may go big. So, if anyone is planning to travel CA Hwy 70 east… you may want to look for another route. If you have concerns about wildfire in your area, or if you have a planned vacation in the forest, go to this web site for fire information: http://inciweb.org/unit/10/ Type in your state, or name of the fire, and it will give you information on the fire(s), a Google map, and it may show an updated progression map or photos of the fire. Most fire information is updated every couple of hours. There are other fire web sites, but they only update once a day.

After the wedding... the party moved from the RV park to the resort, for great food and live music... It was nice to see our Harley riding group together at the same event..."The Lost Boyz".

I just got back from another fire on my old Unit...The Shasta Lake Ranger Dist. Returned Friday night, now I'm going to the State of Washington, to the Wenatchee Complex. It will be a 600 mile drive to the fire! Looks like I will have over 70 days of camping in my 60 second Tent on Wildland fires this year! Way to many days without Rita! I wish I could take my Airstream with me, It gets cold up there this time of year. Firecamp is in a State Park in Wenatchee. Seeya all in 2 weeks...

Hey Scott....just got back yesterday from the fire in Wenatchee. I'm sick with a cold, but we plan to go to Jackson. I took my name off the list until I get back... this morning; dispatch called me and wanted me to go to a fire in Idaho. They forget to take my name off the avail list yesterday when I called them.
The road trip was fun, but because I was sick, I didn’t stop and take photos of any of the great places, or points of interest, between Redding CA & Wenatchee Washington, (600+ miles). I just want to get home and sleep!
