Galley sink drain. What is this?

Working on many AS projects at once, now I need to know what this is? I know where it goes but what's the purpose? I'm familiar with home plumbing and have never seen anything like this.

I saw a picture in another forum of this but it didn't mention what it was. Mine look rusty so it probably needs to be changed, if needed.

Looks like it might be the pressure cup that attaches to the strainer flange under the counter.

Yes, it was siliconed to the strainer flange but I don't know what the purpose is. Does it take the place of a vent?

No, it would have a bolt at the base that clamps the strainer to the waste drain under the sink basin. Google image search basket strainer assemblies and you'll see diagrams showing how it works - too hard to explain with just words.

Got it, thanks. The sink must have leaked which is why they put silicon to hold them on and silicon around the strainer.

Should only need a rubber gasket. See link above.

That's the same site I found when I searched.
I went to Lowes last night to look at sink strainers. Sure enough, they had them looking pretty much the same as the picture I posted. Anywhere from $12.99 to $34.99 each. I think what threw me was the silicon the PO used to hold it in place.

Thanks for the help. Something else to add to my list.
