Copper pipe and pex aren't the same size

Hello all;

So my husband found two holes in the copper pipe right at the back on the trailer, under the sink. Since we leave on a road trip to Nova Scotia on Tuesday, he decided to cut out the affected pipe and replace with pex. Problem is the pex won't fit onto the remaining copper pipe. Didn't want to get too involved after hearing his exasperated WTF's but does anyone know how this could be repaired....quickly.

Thanks,

Lori

Sorry, should add that the shark-bite adapter does not fit around the copper tubing enough though it should be the correct size.

There is a good possibility that the copper has been frozen and has swollen, if that is the case you may need to cut back until you find piping the right size for the fitting to "bite" on. Or you may need to pull out an entire section. One quick and dirty fix is to use a bit of rubber heater hose (like you would use on a car) and a couple of hose clamps. It can be stretched to fit over a swollen pipe and bridge the bad section. I have done this as a temporary repair until I could get to a place and time to do a proper repair.

Can you not sweat in a copper line repair...or is it too tight space wise?

The copper pipe has been frozen at some point and stretched, but not failed. Very very common problem you have run into. You will need to get to some part which has not been frozen and stretched, which may or may not be difficult. I have had to go to a copper fitting on the original piping, like a T or union, un solder it, and replace a short piece of copper with new in order to use fittings like shark bite.

Also possible you have pex/pex fitting and not pex/copper. A quick fix temporary is as above, vinal tube to fit over the copper with clamps. Only for cold water.

Consider a silicone tape such as Rescue Tapeģ Self-Fusing Silicone Tape . Since it is in a drain it needn't be food grade.

My son has used it for a radiator hose leak successfully.

The outside diameter of all nominal pipe size (say 1/2 inch) is the same. Sharkbite fittings in 1/2 inch will fit copper, pex, gray polly, and cpvc. Some other fittings are pipe specific, but not the Sharkbite the OP mentioned.
