Step won't stay up on '68 Intl Sovereign Ambassador

Our entry step (original) will not stay up on our 1968 Ambassador International. It moves back and forth freely but when we raise it to the closed position and drive for a very short period, it will extend back out. Any suggestions? Could we be missing a part?

Do you have any pics? There should be a bar with a hand grip that you pull outward to lower the step also it holds the step up when the step is retracted. On mine, it takes a good tug to release the steps, in fact, my wife can never do it because she can't pull hard enough to release them.
