Modifying a Fastec door lock

A little background, I purchased a 1975 Argosy 28' that needs alot of tlc. The PO must not have wanted to replace the door lock with a lock of proper vintage so he covered the door handle opening with a patch and tryed to install a deadbolt. I assume that did not work so well because he also installed a hasp style latch and a padlock. I can't say I would have put a vintage replacement lock in either with them goimg for a couple of hundred bucks. My solution to this was to install a Fastec RV lock. Fortunatley I am a machinist and have the tools to make what ever I need. First problem I encountered was the lock assembly had to be moved up about an inch and a half and rearward about half an inch so that the inside handle would be centered in the screen door opening. This now means a spacer will have to be machined to fit between the lock assembly and the inside of the door frame. Also the spring loaded catch in the lock and the deadbolt pin will have to be remade longer.

What I did today was to remove the old patch and lock, removed the interior sheetmetal and insulation. With the new lock location figured out I cut a new patch for the outside. I had to remove the inner brace that ran with the midline, 1. to be able to rivet on the new exterior patch and 2. to remove about 3 inches of the brace for the lock. I made it as far as getting the new exterior patch and the brace riveted back onto the door. Tomorrow I will get the spacer cut and will start making the new deadbolt pin and door catch longer.

Got the 1/2" spacer made to go between the door frame and the lock assembly. The pics show the gap I needed to fill, the spacer to fill the gap and reinforce the door frame, and the spacer inserted into place.

These are the lock parts I will remake to make up for the spacer I needed to put in. The last pic shows how all the parts fit in. Simple.

In case your wondering why the spacer? It is so that the inside part of the door lock is back far enough from the screen door frame that the deadbolt knob can still be accessed.

Got the new extended door catch and deadbolt pin made today. I made these pieces 3/4" longer than the originals. Tomorrow I will cut the new door frame opening and then figure out a way to close up and reinforce the old opening.

Got the door frame cut and got the lock installed and all is working as expected. I still need to close up the old openings that the PO hacked into the door frames and I think I will go ahead and reskin the door now that I know the lock and location are good.

Have you had any issues with the latch since installing yours?

No issues at all, except I forget which direction to turn the key for the deadbolt. I need to mark that. I still need to modify the screen door to clear the lock. Just haven't got a round to it yet, just so much to do and so little time.
