Door latching issue

I just replaced my gasket around the door and the latch wouldn’t close at all. I had to trim some of the gasket back to get it to shut but now I’m worried about it leaking. Is this normal for a 92 Excella? How do you guys solve this and make the door shut easier.

Wow, not everyone all at once... over 50 views and nobody has an opinion or advise. e.g. "Same here or here's what I did..." Maybe I'll try the gasket room.
