Bargman L-100. Now what?

I have the L-100 on my Cayo. It's in working condition but is clearly worn and since I'm planning on camping fairly extensively I don't want it to fail especially if that results in a lock-in or lock-out.

Replacements are still available but are costly. Reports are the quality, which was never especially high on these, is lower than it was originally due to deterioration of the tooling towards the end of the production run.

Any advice? Particularly:

- If I keep this are there particular parts I can clean, inspect, lubricate, adjust, or replace that will prevent a failure?
- Is replacing it with another L-100 likely to provide a satisfactory solution?
- If I replace it with something else, what locks are the best candidates to consider? How extensive are the modifications to the door and strike?

I am in the position of looking into this at the moment, from what i can make out it is the bolt that needs to be extended and then it should be fairly straight forward, i certainly won't give out the ridiculous money some of the dealers want for an extended bolt when a $50 lock suddenly becomes a $280 lock i am sure a machine shop can make alot of things for $230!

On my trailer the bolt was in good shape but the other parts needed replacing. I bought the cheaper of the two locksets and combined the two. Works great!

Andy and Inland recently posted about a new replacement for the L-100 and L-200 locks. See http://www.airforums.com/forums/f206...ock-87671.html. Looks worth considering. I know I have not been impressed with the L-100s. I've replaced the one on my Trade Wind twice now.

The ones in his post are for the "special" version that fits Airstream. I assume that there would be a version that has the regular length bolt if that's what you need for your Cayo.

Bargman L-100. Now what?

I have a 68 ambassador. Bargman l200. = long bolt . Had to turn knob while talking nicely to it to eventually get the bolt to back out of the door jamb. I spent "several" hours dis and re assembling and adding a few homemade parts . New works great everytime. It always was ok from inside. The shaft in the knob was jumping out and wearing out 1 if the inner moving parts. Patience paid off....

I ultimately did find a NOS overhaul kit that included the outer knob and trim, and the mechanism. It's installed now and works OK. I ended up using a little loctite on the screw that holds the inside knob in place since it was working its way loose. I think that was actually much of my problem.
