Check Valve

We had this exact same problem. It is most likely the check valve in your pump as some have replied. Our initial issue was fresh tank filling when on city water. When dry camping we had the intermittent issue you describe. We tried to clear any sand caught in pump’s check valve by cycling pump and city water to no avail. It was fixed permanently when I added an external check valve inline to the water tank shown in the photo. This was way easier than replacing check valve in pump. What is happening is that water in the system is leaking back into the fresh water tank through the partially open check valve, dropping the system pressure. Once you fix the check valve (back flow) issue, system pressure will be maintained and the pump will only go on when you use the faucets. Also, will not backfill fresh tank when on city water.

Please provide a link to the source of this valve? I would like to make this addition to my Airstream.

Thanks,

Randy

It’s an easy job, except getting to the connecting plumbing. I decided to replace the original rigid pipes that were NOT installed as per the manufacturer’s specs in the manual that came with my FC. Specifically, the manual calls for 18” of flexible hose on both intake and output sides of the pump. It also specifies that rigid pipes not be adjacent to the mount, frame or other structures. The Airstream installation used only rigid pipes and these were tight against the wooden mount for the pump (see photo of original installation).

Installing a new pump and replacing rigid pipes with 18” flexible hoses solved the intermittent pumping AND quieted the pump immeasurably. I suspect it also helps the pump longevity to have less vibration against the hard framing material.

Just one of many premature replacement parts (2 hot water circuit boards, refer fan, antenna crank, black tank flush check valve, 2 vent fan gaskets, awning lights, to name a few) I have had to install on my two new Airstreams within the first year or so.
Great info and Appsman0428 as well. Thank you

My pump sounds really loud, I am sure I will find the same or similar. I have found leaks from the factory, a severed wire to the water heater, etc. Nothing surprises me anymore.
