Water pump sounds like Tommy gun

What causes the random water pump performance. You use the pump...all is good. You use it the next day and it sounds like a Tommy gun. Very inconsistent. I really don’t know what to expect when I open the faucet valve.

The most likely difference from day to day is air in the lines. Turn off the pump and open two faucets (at different elevations, if possible) to get some air in the plumbing, turn them off and try the pump. Your system may be quieter until the air bleeds out.
Some people install an “accumulator”, a section of pipe or a bulb that is always filled with air, to even out the pump discharge pressure. If the lack of air in the lines causes hammering, look into that option. I’ve seen Airforums posts on the subject.

Don, you beat me to the post!

Pentair offers a silencing kit and accumulator for the Shurflow pump. In fact, they do not recommend connecting the pump with rigid pipe like Airstream does.

I found our pump was noisy because the pump was tilted on the rubber mounts. I moved the pipes and straightened the pump. While you’re there, snug up the fittings to ensure they’re tight and won’t suck air.

The silencer kit is two flexible lines that isolate the pump from the rigid pipe. The accumulator acts as a reservoir and help with short-cycling of the pump.

There’s also a setting adjustment on the pump head for the turn-on and shut off pressure. The factory turn-on pressure is 30 PSI and off at 55 PSI. The accumulator should be pre-charged to 30 PSI.

Good luck!

if you install an “accumulator”, that will minimize the noise
it absorbs the sudden water surge

These "noisy pump accumulator site:airforums.com" search results should lead to productive discussions on this:

https://www.google.com/search?q=nois...=airforums.com

The accumulator we installed helped a lot, as did better rubber pads under the pump "feet" and sound dampening material in the pump space.

Good luck.

It took me a couple of years to track down all the sources of noise. The silencing kit helped a lot, but the big offenders were the pipes banging on the floor or cabinetry. Install a bunch of cheap Pex talon clamps anywhere the pipe isn't anchored (which is pretty much everywhere) and you'll see a huge improvement.

Could you have something which is making contact with the pump or nearby water lines? Perhaps something that should be fastened down has come loose?

Another option is to install this product, an Intelligent RV Water Pump Controller:

https://www.irvwpc.com/

We still have some noise after we've towed the trailer until we run water through the faucets and shower, but this device otherwise makes the pump REAL quite. There are times I can't even hear it.

My pump is so quiet I can not hear it when I turn it on to purge the residual water out when winterizing or any other time for that matter. I installed a Shure Silencing kit for about $25. However, I also installed a HD Remco pump and the are really quiet.

I found the shelf my pump was mounted on became loose. It made a significant increase in noise. A few screws fixed it.

Was your pump secured by 4 screws? Ours is only mounted by the two front mounts.
