Shurflo extreme 4 pump acting oddly
Greetings,
Last year I installed a Shurflo Extreme 4.0 pump. It worked fine for awhile, but I am having some problems now.
The major problem is surging. With any of the fixtures open, it surges from low to high to low to high.... But that is not all. Various pump people say it is because of an air leak on the inlet side. I found just the opposite.
I have a valve upstream for adding antifreeze. Just on a whim I opened this valve while the pump was surging, and it stopped surging. It sucked air for a while. Then I closed the valve, and the pump began picking up water again, and now it does not surge! It works fine.
Then I opened another fixture for awhile. Then it starts surging again.
So what gives?? Adding air actually fixes the problem..

Any ideas what causes this? I was on a trip a months ago and the water pump worked fine.
Now getting ready for another trip and it's "surging" really bad (pump is relatively new) . . . I've tried a few things like
Cleaning the Filter (it was spotless).
Cleaning the "bubbler thingy" on the end of the kitchen faucet (also spotless), found another filter screen on the other end of the Kitchen faucet/wand . . . also spotless.
Tightening a few hose clamps at the tank, the hoses on the pump, hose to city water connection point . . . (tank is full).
Tried running the water with all fixtures going to get air out (it doesn't surge when doing this, the pump just stays on full time . . . ran it for 10+/- mins.)
As I understand it there's an adjustment screw on the pump, but I thought that was just for regulating pressure (so I haven't messed with it . . . plus I have to "un-mount" it to try that option).
Any ideas?
Thanks, MarkR

In my experience the most common cause is a drip in the system in the most inaccessible place possible.
Can also be caused by a leaking check valve.

Stupid Question:
Where's the possible "Leaking Check Valve"? In the pump or somewhere else in the system?
Thanks, MarkR

Stupid Question No. 2:
wouldn't an air leak (if it was causing this) have to be somewhere in the piping on the incoming side of the pump?

Not sure about your model but it should be in the city water inlet line. It keeps back flow from flowing out the city water inlet.

I think the tank pick up it clogged with allege. It surges because it can't draw. Example is when you opened the antifreeze inlet it stoped. Use air to blow back to the tank then drain and sanitize.

I read the install instructions for the one I have in a '13. It talks about water line inside diameter, no accumulator, and not to use elbows for they cause resistance to water flow. This back pressure is what will cause the pump to surge. My system has 4 elbows before it runs out of sight of my water pump, and more thru the system.
This surge is not from sucking air from the intake in the FW tank.
It is the wrong pump for my system.
