Plumbing damage from blowout

I just took my 1st trip in my 2001 Bambi 19 that I having been full timing in for last 3 months. I am in Rawlins Wyoming (from Austin, Tx.). 5 hours in I had a blowout that ripped my grey and black water plumbing from underneath. I need to find a source for parts OR repair. Any sources would be very much appreciated! Thanks all. Db

A photo might help but, Lowe’s/Homedepot carries ABS pipe and the gate valves can be purchased from most any camping store or Camping World. Make sure you get pipe glue made for ABS black pipe.

Plumbing damage from blowout

And don’t slop the glue into the valve blades. It will cause problems if you get it in there. Best way is a light smear in the female part of the valve and a heavy coat on the male part that goes in to the valve.
And do cut the pipe square, take off any burrs, and test fit TWICE before gluing anything. Wear gloves, the glue wears off, won’t wash off. ABS glue on hairy forearms...Don’t ask...[emoji30]

I got my valves from outdoors mart and my pipe and fittings from Lowe’s. I used the white pvc plastic instead of the black abs which is hard to find. Ythe white is the same size and shape. You can get the valves fron Amazon also. Maybe next day. You need to see just what is damaged.

If you have to use PVC and connect it to ABS there is a special glue for that. It is green in color. Can't remember the exact name.
If you have the room you could also use Ferco couplings.
Good luck!

After making repairs, I would suggest upgrading tires and installing TPMD

Most parts you will need can be found at Lowe’s, Home Depot or such. Others can be overnighted to you. While you are under there you might want to take some pictures and post them just to make sure you didn’t do any other damage. There’s a lot of great folks here that tell a lot just from a picture. I realize it’s a little late for this occurrence but a Tire Pressure Monitor System might have saved you from all this. Please consider investing in one. The learning curve will be less of a challenge soon, hang in there.

The availability of black ABS pipe is regional, unfortunately. When I was performing my rebuild near Baltimore, MD, the closest place I could find ABS pipe in stock was a Lowes in Fredericksburg, VA. If at all possible, I'd avoid mixing PVC and ABS in your repairs. Even if you use the proper adhesive, it's not as good of a bond as ABS to ABS, and it looks terrible.

Quick notes on plumbing with large plastic pipe:

1. It's very difficult to cut 4" pipe square freehand. I suggest using a chop saw.
2. Deburring the pipe is critical, especially with large sizes. Burrs on the outside of the pipe can wipe off a nice straight line of adhesive on insertion and make your joint leak. Go around the outside corner of the cut with some sandpaper and round off the edge. For commercial work, we used a tool that beveled the outside edge like a pencil sharpener. That's probably overkill for a couple odd fittings at atmospheric pressure, but it's worth the time to remove any burrs or sharp outside edges.
3. Prime both surfaces. Primer softens up the surface a bit and helps the adhesive bond better, as well as removes any dust or oil. Don't skip the primer.
3. Apply a layer of glue to the pipe, then the socket, then the pipe again, then assemble as quickly as possible.
4. To assemble, insert the pipe into the socket then immediately twist the pipe 90 degrees inside the socket and hold for 30 seconds. Twisting helps to distribute the glue to any spots you might have missed. Holding for 30 seconds helps prevent the joint from popping apart before the glue has a chance to set.

Not to get picky. But it is 3" pipe.
Read the instructions carefully on the combo glue.
You can always redo it at a later date.
Black paint makes white pipe look like. ABS.

Possibly more important question.

What age tire?

If original from 2001 (or even 2010), any tire would likely fail.

The tires were Duro something as I recall and I am unsure on age. As I had bought the trailer just a few months before and towed it home over 800 miles and they looked good I put too much faith in them. At 1st opportunity after blowout I replaced both plus spare.

The plumbing saga continues with Airstream saying 4 weeks to drop ship the parts (I don’t have an address 4 weeks out) and no store within 100+ miles that MIGHT have what I need. The other wrinkle being that I am still in tear down mode just to determine extent of damage. One thing I can see is that the piping broke close to the tanks at reduced flange which seems will be a problem to fix.

Black water tank access?

To continue with the repair I need to access the BW tank which appears to be in a raised platform under the commode. The plumbing that was ripped out goes up thru the plywood subfloor so there is no access from underneath. I don’t see anyway to remove the platform to get to the tank, This is becoming an epic bummer.

Yes. The older thread came up in a web search for BW tank after I had posted here. It was model specific and mentioned pics. I was unsure of how else to contact.

Tire failure

I strongly suggest you read THIS thread and ALL the posts.

Also you can significantly lower the chance of another tire failure by installing TPMS.

Just looking at your tires is a known incorrect way to learn the facts about their real condition.

In trailer application tire life is 3 - 5 years MAX. I have written about how to properly inflate trailer tires on an RVTireSafety blog. If you want to learn more you can Google for it.

Sorry to hear this... Most AS dealers will overnight you parts of can’t find locally. The first thing I purchased for my 28’ was the TST TPMS .. it has saved me once and therefore paid for itself. The Carr fire in No. Ca could have been prevented if he had the tpms system on his trailer tires.....Good Luck

Colorado Possibilities

You could try Windish in Denver and Longmont, CO. Also Timeless Travel Trailers in Wheatridge, CO. They repair Airstream. You could give our Fort Collins Go to maintenance and repair guy, Luke Bernander.
