Pex with braided stainless cover?🤔

I thought saw a recent thread where a member posted a photo of a pex water supply line that was covered in stainless mesh braid. I've searched the forums for this item, but cannot find a trace of it.

Was that my imagination?? Any help with this is appreciated. Thank you. 🙏🏽 😔

I would have to look, but we went PEX and used a fitting to screw the braided hose. Sharkbite at Lowe’s sells PEX parts and pieces now. We have PEX in both Airstreams, our house and barn apartment. Few to no issues. Good luck

What's the advantage of a stainless cover on PEX?
Don't most leaks happen at the clamps?
Isn't the advantage of braided stainless in it's flexibility, which PEX is not (to a large degree)
My old home was refitted with Uponor, a type of PEX but uses a unique compression fitting and tool. So far no leaks.

I've never seen PEX that was covered in stainless mesh braid. Maybe it was PEX connected to a hose that was covered in stainless mesh braid that was then connected to the fixture.

The advantage might be just looks... When I first saw the photo I thought it was odd. But then I remember my old ss braided latex hose supply lines ruptured in 9 - 10 years and began to think they'd look nice ans last much longer... 🤔😏

Pex does make short lengths of flexible-braided-stainless “pipe.” The advantage of these is they are flexible and can be curved/routed around obstacles.

The disadvantages are that they are very $$ and they are very BULKY. A nominally 1/2” diameter section is more like 1 1/2”. And although they are flexible, they are not flexible like a braided toilet or sink supply line. They can only bend/curve a modest amount.

I believe what was shown here on the forum recently were Sharkbite or similar adapter fittings that allowed for connection of Pex to household braided stainless lines. That would be a better way to go, imo.

The “braided pex” sections I described in my pervious post are not actually made of or by Pex. It’s an offering from Sharkbite:

So what's you're showing is that the orange section is inside the stainless steel braided mesh section? What is the orange section made of? Will this last longer than the 9 or 10 years of the latex hose? Thank you for posting. 👍🏽

No, I was just showing a section of standard red 1/2” Pex tubing next to the 1/2” braided stainless section, for a size comparison.

There is no standard pex tubing inside of the braided stainless section. It is constructed entirely differently. I have no information on how long it will last, but assume it will give service life like Pex tubing.

It has Sharkbite fittings on each end, so the fittings would simply slide over 1/2” Pex tubing to complete the connection.
