New to the group -1965

Well, it looks like I'm the first to post to the 65 Globetrotter group. My wife and I picked up our trailer several months ago and it's been a project ever since. New floor, new cushions, new curtains, shower fixture, tires, and the list keeps growing. We're excited about taking it on the road for our first trip, but still have some challenges ahead of us. I should have some pictures up soon.

Welcome to AirstreamForums "65trotter". As far as I know, you and I are the only 1965 Globetrotters here on the site. I know of 64 and 66's but I believe we are the only '65's.

Be sure and post your "challenges and discoveries" in the approporiate Restoration sub-forums to share with us all.

I would enjoy seeing some pictures of your restoration. Use your PhotoGallery to post some before, during and afters if you have them.

-Best Regards and Welcome;

Also welcome

you are going to love this forum. It will teach you everything you need or want to know about Airstreaming. We have had our 71 Safari for about four months and have done just about everything we need to do thanks to the info on the forum. Have ordered several items from Andy at Inland RV and have been completely satisfied. Good products and good service. Plus, we aren't even kin to him.
Good luck,
Dan in Tennessee

Welcome to the forum. I to am new to the Airstream world. I have just cleared a title glitch on my 65 Globetrotter and am currently fighting a very strong feline smell that seems to be in the back closet. I will try to get some pics up soon.

Looking forward to seeing the pics. I should have some up soon as well. Good luck with the cat smell. I had to deal with that when we bought our house. It can be a tough battle. Keep me posted on your progress....we can share war stories!

Hey fellow '65 Globetrotters. Could I persuade one of you to post a close-up picture of your streetside battery access door. Some previous owner (PO) lost it and I need to fabricate a new one. They replaced it with a sheet of steel and sheetmetal screwed the four corners to the frame. On and off the trailer photo, both sides, would really be appreciated.

ThanX in advanced;

Hey, I'm another 65 Globetrotter, so you're not alone. I've just had mine for 2 months and have been working on it the entire time. I'm doing a remodel, not a restoration however, so a lot of my experiences probably would not help you. I'd love to share what I can though.

Battery Door

Here's a picture of the battery door on. It's basically the same design as the small door at the top of the refrigerator flue (except bigger and with a handle). Hope it helps. It looks like I can only post one pic at a time. So, I'll post the door front and back seperately.

ThanX Chris and Buckmaster. Really appreciate the pix.

About how thick is the door? Looks to be about 1/2 to 3/4".

Best regards;

access door

With out measuring I would say that is about right. iThe door is insulated with a thin sheet of fiberglass batting. The door inserts into the smal channel across the top of the frame and the lock holds it in place at the bottom.

Battery door

Looks like mine is about 7/8" thick in the center. The center portion sits about 3/4" in from the outside edge all the way around. The oustide edge is 1/8" and fits into a slot at the top and locks at the bottom. Hopefully that makes sense.

battery door lock

I'm pretty sure that the lock on the battery door is a standard mail box lock that is used in apartment mailboxes throughout the country. Most come with a kit that has several thow latches and use the one appropriate to your situation and discard the extras. If hard to find definately available from Century Maintenence su

After looking at my battery door lock, I think they are one step up in quality from the apartment mailbox type lock, although the standard box lock might work, I'd recommend a better than average lock to retain door in various conditions.
