Yes, I am nuts

Since all of this aluminum and rivet work remodeling and restoring our '71 Sovereign 31' I have reinvigorated a long time dream of building a kit plane, or rebuilding an older plane.

I believe I have the mechanical skills, and now have developed some of the aluminum/rivet skills, and definitely have the desire...now I just the need that last, and all important...cash.

I grew up flying weekly with gramps and have always dreamed of doing it on my own. Now that I am 50, kids are about gone, and my MX riding days are over I am feeling a draw back to the skies.

BTW, yes, I am crazy. I have a doctors note and the prescriptions to prove it.
All that remains is acquiring the funds.

Man this Airstream project is gonna cost me more than I ever expected.

Man, do I feel your vibe!

So I have friends around airports where folks do their own maintenance. Many "home builts" some beautifully terrorizing things you can do to once perfectly usable airframes....or "kits"... Just call them "experimental"! Well it is not quite that easy... But I was amazed at what some folks would fly....

If you go that route, you will have fun and may even have a reliable, safe plane. Good luck!

I built a Rutan Long EZ back in the early eighties. Still remember the first flight.

Homebuilts need many of the same skills we use restoring Airstreams.

You are not nuts.

Cheers,
Steve

I've built two, a Pitts S2B about 30 years ago, and a Harmon Rocket about 5 years ago. The luster is gone for me with aviation and I just want to walk away from it and just stay on the ground.
