Writing...and reading
I'm impelled to write this for some reason.
I peruse the forums here and elsewhere and love reading and gleaning pertinent information. But sometimes it hurts. Yes hurts to read some posts. Why?
Well because some people aren't very good with spelling while others just aren't very good at proper English. I can get the gist of their writings but the staccato way they write while making sense in their heads doesn't translate well to the typed word. I even find myself doing this. My mind knows what I want to write but when I type it...well a couple significant words are missing.
Please proof over what you type. See if it makes sense to you from the perspective of someone who has no idea what your topic is. You will get your point across to others much faster and easier.

Proper English, spelling, grammar, composition, etc are wayyyyyy down the list of pertinent things to teach these days.
My Mama said this several times while I was growing up..... "You might or might not ever be wealthy, but you WILL know how to spell, write, and speak if I have anything to do with it!"
Thank you, Mom!

Webster's Pocket Dictionary is good enough for me.
Rots of Ruck finding the perfected Treatise of Airstream Literature among posts on the Airforums. I leave that to Rich Luhr...
Advertising Agencies have perfected the English Language. They hire Proof Readers, Copywriters and then have the attorneys go through to 'clean it up'. Then add the disclaimers and the fine print. Boring and misleading, often.
The majority, or maybe just myself, write as thoughts are excreted in a 'mind/bowel movement' of topics that only an employee of Airstream knows the proper terminology.
You have been a member since 2013 and 85 posts. Spellchecking responses on a trailer forum. This is the best you can do?
My mother was from the Netherlands. Learned English in western Montana as a War Bride where no one spoke English, mostly Swedes that no one could understand, as well.
She knows a sh*t kicker when she met one. They are everywhere. She taught me English.
You must know something, first, to write about an Airstream. First start with an Airstream. Use it. Tell us why you like your Airstream. I will personally correct anything you misinterpret and do not understand. Ideas are rare. Critics are common.

Mr. Eklund, Why the negative response concerning my input here? I noted I learn from this forum. I just requested that people read what they write before they 'publish'. Not sure why you thought you had to defend yourself. And as for not mentioning my Airstream, well that's the reason I posted in the "Off Topic" forum.
I just request that folks read what they write/type and edit as they see fit.

You are correct. I apologize for myself and how I delivered my response.
Most member's responses are 'at the moment'. My wife suggests that I type out a response and clean up the nouns and verbs before posting.
If members are reluctant to post a response as they feel their grammar may not be correct, this is a great loss to the Forum.
Those who read ONE Statement and in an emotional state, good or bad, can read the SAME statement and get entirely different opinions of the meaning.

This is a forum comprised of Airstream trailer and motor home owners and aficionados, not spelling bee champions.

Yeah, this is just another slice of life. Anything I do, anywhere I go I encounter a spectrum of people who practice good grammar and diction to those who do not. I have been trying to learn (another) foreign language for a while, but I cannot begin to understand the native speakers who speak so rapidly. Then I realized, it is the same with English. Why do those in the younger generation speak so rapidly and slur so much? Where is Henry Higgins when we need him?

While I appreciate thoughtfully composed and perfectly executed posts, I accept that the world and it's inhabitants are imperfect.
One contributing factor to the abundance of errors is the increasing use of mobile devices to post. It's tough to type accurately and the built in auto-correcting schemes are ... um flawed.
My own excusre for poorly crafted posts is fast and sloppy ypting. I took shop instead of typing in the distant past. This means I can fix my Airstream but have some difficuty documenting it.

Some people can't type, can't spell, and their grammar is execrable. That doesn't mean that they don't have something useful to communicate or that they don't communicate. I appreciate their efforts to provide me with information.
I learned a second language as an adult and speak it fluently. Despite that, when I write in that language, my wife (a native speaker) has to proof read and correct any number of errors. Maybe that helps me sympathize with less than sterling writing in some of the posts on the forum.

Criticizing grammar in a post is akin to missing the forest for the trees.

I like to listen to what is said. How it is said brings color to the conversation.

A Baby Diaper and Submit Reply

I like thinking of writing 'off the cuff' as a disposable Baby Diaper.
You never know what to expect, until getting into the subject, find the correct verbs and adjectives to describe the issue and wish you had just never selected Submit Reply.
An experience, at times, requires a deep breath, hold it and go forward with what is required to get the job, done.

All I asked was that folks edit/read their posts before they publish. We could all debate the old 3 Rs (that itself is a problem) ; ) and how they apply in today's world.
I also find it great that Mr.Eklund realized my intention and added a nice response to it.
Yes maybe we do need a little help from Henry Higgins now and then. I still have a problem with saying ain't and spreading...'uh'...throughout my vocabulary. But I'm working on it.

Here's another vote for proofreading, and before that, thinking. Sometimes we leave out important details when we get in a hurry. Back in the days before the printing press, a priest was slowly reading the Bible while a room full of scribes wrote what he read. That was the way Bibles were "printed" back then. They were copying the section that included the Ten Commandments. One scribe missed one word when they were doing "Thou shalt not commit adultery." Yes, he missed "not" and changed the whole meaning. That particular Bible is now in a museum, turned to that page.
As I was typing this I had to go back and correct a few things. Some were spelling errors, and one was a sentence that wasn't as clear as I wanted.
