why the flamingo?
I want to say in advance SORRY. This is my opinion and I am trying to bridge the gap here...
I would like to know what is up with the flamingos. I simply do not get it. I do not understand it. I really do not like them and find them totally tacky. At a recent rally they were everywhere, and I just do not understand. Can someone please explain it to me? Can someone enlighten me?

I get it -- Emily Litella! "What's all the fuss about Crustaceans?"
I dunno. I see flamingos at SOB sites in campgrounds too. Better keep the 'Save Rudy' squad away, what with their hairspray flamethrowers and all.

The pop culture symbol of kitschy bad taste and revered as retro cool.
Frank, It's a symbol of what Wally did with the travel trailer. Took something that was relegated to the Gypsies and Vagabonds and turned it into something elegant and pure Americana.

Frank, I hate 'em too...My wife loves 'em... As long as she keeps their presence down to a dull roar, I let her have a few, and display them (unobtrusively).
I think that may be why they are popular among RVers. Most people don't like them, for the reasons you stated in your first post. Since it is so tacky, and so many people don't like them, the ones that do like them display them as a symbol of going against the crowd.
As I write this, I'm looking at the paper towel dispenser, with its flamingo-shaped wire ornament on top...

Here's my hypothesis:
Flamingos along with various genres of lawn art started in the 40s reaching iconic magnitude in the 50s. I recall my parents had a pair of cast concrete flamingos with rebar legs in the 50s were were already quite old and held together by duct tape ( the history of duct tape is another story). Concrete lawn art's function was somewhat a puedo status status symbol, middle class suburbia not being able to afford the more affluent marble urinating children fountains or bronze deer. Those more transient elements on the fringes of society and fringes of metropolitan areas lived in "Trailer Parks" in park model house trailers. In an effort to appear more middle class some of early trailer dwellers would festoon their meager yards with lawn art including flamingos, dwarfs, rabbits, etc. The American middle class, looking for something to dispose their disposable income on, together with the resurgence of the back to the land ecomovement, the rise of the hippies, and new availabilty low cost light weight plastic molding technology fostered an atmosphere of camping chic. Flamingos being predominately one color which could be cheaply manufactured, fell into this slot of psuedo trailer trash, los cost hippy chic and the rest is history.

Frank,
First of all I thought you were an intelligent guy, I thought of all people in the Airstreaming world "Frank gets it!"
And now this...?
Not understanding the Flamingo thing is like asking "Why did they use Aluminum to build these trailers?"
Come on Frank...maybe being stuck on that zipper messed you up abit?..or maybe that homespun hooch ya'll had in Verona?

I know what you mean, Frank, I don't really get it either, this obsession with all things flamingo, Or for that matter, Aluminum trailers, Pies, etc, etc. Unfortunatey, flamingos have the ability to fly out twenty foot fences and like crows, are attracted to shiny things. Better stop polishing or build a bigger fence. Resistence IS futile.
How do you like my lil' shunk? I have two.
