living in AZ the sky is usually clear most of the time and i can "guesstimate" the time [within 15 min.] pretty accurately w/o a watch;
also - it's usually 5 o'clock somewhere - 'nuff said.

Like asking why Mercedes or Range Rover, Mont Blanc, Martin Guitar, Leica cameras or a lot of other things are so expensive. You get what you pay for. My Submariner costs $1,700.00 when I bought it, I could easly sell it for twice that or more and it now costs well over $5,000.00. How much can you get for a 20 year old Timex? I bought a Rolex Daytona some years ago, decided that I really didn't need two Rolexes and sold it for a thousand more than I bought it for just four months later. That same watch is well over $10,000.00 today. Well made and it keeps good time and I'll pass it to my son some day. An orginal Martin D45 cost maybe a thousand dollars , they sell for 100-150 thousand dollars if you can find one. Some things hold or increase in value and then some things are worth half of what you paid for them the minute you walk out the door. And.... my Rolex isn't broken, I just wear it so hard that it's time for a good cleaning, polishing and lubricating.

Dennis: To answer your question about Rolex's.....no, not necessarily. They look pretty, but you are paying for the name, they are known not to keep the best time.
My hubby is the watch guy in our family. He owns a variety of brands including Seiko, Casio, Fossil, Renato, Invicta, and Oris. He used to have a Rolex, but sold it because it didn't keep time right.
Me I just have a few Invicta's.

Stainless Rolex - not flashy at all. If your Rolex doesn't keep time well, it needs to serviced and adjusted.

Retired. Retired Concord watch on the very day I retired. Now, I either look at the sun to approximate the time or look at my iPhone for improved accuracy.

No they still perform. They are a great band! Though lead singer, Peter Cetera has not been with the band for many years. Here's their website:
Chicago - The Official Band Website
They are even scheduled to perform here:
May 22
Windsor, Ontario, Canada The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor
Is that near you?

Why rolex
I have worn my Rolex Submariner everyday for over 35 years. It's like an Airstream, with proper maintenance they both should last as long as I will need them.
Both are just habits that I have picked up along the way with no regrets.

I'm a big Rolex Submariner fan...cost me about $15 in China....
It's worked great for many years, and when it finally does give up the ghost, it's disposable!

Good habits, Chip, unlike my ragtag herd of old radios. Too much work just to dust them!

I have two fossil watches. One I recieved from school for an award and one my wife bought me for christmas. The school watch I have had for years and works great. My whole family has fossil watches. Good price and they work well.

Mitch.... the watch guy.
Here's one for 'ya...only cost 'ya 200k.
Three battery powered sitting dead on my dresser, how 'bout one that would shut down when you pull the stem out to set it. Batteries might last a bit longer.
Is it just me or do you seem age more slowly when you ware a stopped watch?

I am pretty hard on watches so not much is spent on them, but I have two that are testaments to survival. I have a old Casio G-Shock and an LL Bean outdoors watch. The Casio has been run over in the driveway and spent 3 months in Lake Murray while the LL Bean fell 200' off of a radio tower in Alabama landing in a gravel parking lot.
They both look like heck but they work just fine.

Not sure if I would age slower! Kinda like not drinking, it just seems like you live longer! As for pulling out the crown to preserve the battery, it's a myth. Kinda like the flashlight you never use it fir a year and when u need it... Dead! Most guys are handy around here so buy a case back opener and buy your battery at Radio Shack. I'm having fun with this thread!

But what's your REI number?! Ours is 466***. Once met a woman with 12**! I think low numbers should get a discount.

Yep, my wife is a doc and she wears one only half the time.
REI... hey mine is 2886*** But growing up in the seattle area I was in the old REI seattle store and a guy in front of me had the member # 386. This was back in the early 90's
