That's an oversimplification, but the gist is there.
Trickle-UP economics...?

I'll spend it or invest it as I wish. After all, it was mine before it was theirs. They are only giving back some of what they took.

Wouldn't it have been lots easier if they had just lowered the tax rate rather than spend millions giving some back?

Go figure.

Answer: Yup.

If the nanny-staters were serious about their intent, they would take that rebate and purchase what they 'think we should be purchasing' on our behalf rather than trust us to do the 'right thing.'

For those who need detailed(facts) explanation(truth) I can not go into further detail for fear of another deleted post & possible warning. But that's O.K. It's fun to see what we are planning to do with this little 'gift' here on the ol' forum.

I did spend about two hours on the IRS.gov website pissed that we were not in the loop and did find that the stimulus will NOT be counted as earned income for your 2008 return. It will also not be deducted in part or whole from any refund you may be intitled to for 2008.

A little lesson in economics...

from my old friend, teacher, and pizza-eating/beer-drinking buddy, Art Laffer:

"There is no stimulus from a rebate, period."

Art goes on to say that it is even worse than zero if you take into account the substitution effects, economist-speak for getting-something-for-nothing-produces-nothing-productive-in-return.

"Ask yourself why not a $40,000 rebate per person, indexed for inflation of course, if a $600 rebate is so good. Heck, why don't we give rebates equal to GDP, so that everyone who doesn't work and doesn't produce receives everything, and all those who do work and do produce receive nothing?"

If you are interested in a little elementary economics, read his piece in the WSJ at That 'Stimulus' Nonsense - WSJ.com.

I am going to buy some trees for the backyard campsite

There is a joke in there somewhere involving something that doesn't grow on trees. I am still working on that. But here is on old joke.

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day.
Give a man a fishing pole and he will drink beer.

Not so funny, but true

Just another election year scam that was used in 2002 by both political parties. Rebate - it was my $$ to begin with.
What else do you do with it - buy Airstream parts!
If you really want to stimulate the economy - purchase something that is NOT manufactured in a foreign land..........

Probably a Vanguard mutual fund. That way my $600 will be worth about $25,500 in 30 years when I'm ready to retire. (That's if I can get a realistic 12% return).

Goverment FREE stuff.

I am going to save my rebate $ to pay for the FREE medical insurance that some politicians want the government to give us for FREE.
What ever became of Americans that took responibility for they own lives? Now they think the government should bail them out of there own mess and give them everthing for FREE.What part about there is NO free lunch do they not understand?

Well, the "gov'ment" says we make too much money to get one of their stimulas checks...yeah, right! However, we got bonuses this week to more than make up for theirs...we're going to Cabo San Lucas, take a week long siesta from the restoration project. Ahhhh~

Well...maybe they're right ~

Check from the Man?

You have got to be kidding, we won't see one of those in our house. But we did pay a record amount in taxes last year. I don't get it..............

While stepping carefully to avoid both economic and political debate, I feel compelled to say that I know a great many hard-working and productive people who are getting those checks. I'm sincerely happy for those who don't qualify, because it means that $300 to $600 per person doesn't make the difference between having health insurance for the next quarter or being able to fix your vehicle or even make your rent. Or in my case, which is slightly less dire, being able to give almost the entire amount to my veterinarian. ($25 is going toward that Tradewind raffle, though!) Not that the stimulus checks are a problem-solver, but that they do make a difference for quite a number of people. And pets. And based on this thread, they'll be doing quite a bit for Airstreams!

A Tire Pressure Monitor

Yesterday, a friend lost his 3rd tire within a month (2 failures yesterday) with substantial damage to his 32 Limited. He had just checked the tires at a rest stop . They were E-rated Greenball tires, fairly new. His trouble was partially that he didn't know he had lost a tire until his wife commented on a new noise. By that time, he was emitting a cloud of smoke and chunks of rubber.

That impelled me to order a tire monitoring system today. It may help me stop or slow before it gets to the damage point.
