This here love of mine has departed my home. It has found it's way to new drive. In it's place.....Our new (to us) Airstream.

Someone please tell me not to be sad. I loved this car as much as you can love an object.

Cara, Once you get to making the new Airstream your own you will understand what real "Aluminitus" is all about. These silver home away from homes very quickly become an obsession and you will learn to love it too! That was a Sweeeet Ride but I for one bet the trailer will become a SweeeeT Camp for you! Ah, the glorious A-Body... mine was a '71 Buick Skylark Custom Convertible. I loved it dearly. In fact, it was the very first convertible I ever rode in, my mom's best friend was its 2nd owner in the very early '70s and came to take us for a ride the day she bought it, a cool fall day with the top down. About 20 years later, Mom's friend was ready to pass the Skylark on and take a trip around the world, and I was its 3rd owner for about 10 years.

It was VERY hard to give it up, but when my partner was about to start med school we were moving to a different city, a smaller house and reducing to 1 income (and 1 huge debt generator!) I found a couple who were excited to care for the Skylark and got a fair chunk of change to put toward the renovation of our house in Fort Worth.

For 4 years I was a staunch pragmatist, but when we found out that he matched for residency here in Fort Worth, I started looking in earnest for an Airstream because we didn't need to spend the money I'd been saving for relocation on its intended purpose.

Enjoy the Airstream... don't forget the Cutlass, but remember you didn't have to pay for its paint and other needs, and that you couldn't sleep comfortably in it!

See, this car, more than a car. My 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible. Part of my identity, I suppose. It was my daily driver until my son was born in 2008. Even then I drove it every other week since my husband and I would swap kid pick-up duties. Then I lost my job in Oct. 2010. I gained the time I desperately need to be with and raise my son, but had no time without him (my morning commute) where I could drive 'The Bold Olds". I think I drove it 6 times last year. So sad. It sat on a battery charge sooooo much, looking sad.
An Airstream, however, hmm, I recreational vehicle that MY WHOLE FAMILY could use and enjoy! Cost wise, it's been and even trade. It's foolish to let the car rot when I am not using it at all. I never wanted to sell it. I never thought this day would come.
I like motorcycles, I like Airstreams a lot, but I LOVE cars. I mean, I LOVE cars.
I weep.

Oh, gosh. Thanks for the sympathy, guys. But, don't feel too bad for me......I got 1969 Camaro sitting in the garage!

Hi, I have a 1959 Ford in garage that doesn't ever get used anymore. Especially after we bought our Airstream, which blocks my driveway preventing me from getting the car out. I guess since I never use it, I will get it running a drivable and sell it too. I have had this car since 1977 and will miss it. Hopefully someone will be able to drive it and get use out of it.

Because of the transitory nature of cars, I never get too excited about their arrival or upset on their departure; for me they're just things to move you from a A to B, and there's always "next years model".

The Airstream, as I'm already finding out, is quite different. Maybe I'm not as pragmatic as I thought I was. :~)

I should add that I've never owned anything approaching a "Classic Car", so maybe I just haven't been bitten by the bug.

I know of what you speak....sometimes it's very hard to do what's needed. Especially if your a car person at heart.

Our "car" will stay with us long past the AS though, it's been in the Family since new. Much more of a "family jewel" and will stay 'til the end.

I suppose it would be more 'convenient' for us to have a more appropiate vehicle than our convertible to tow our Airstream. We've had our Buick longer (second Buick in 25 years) than our Airstream. We searched and bought our vintage Trade Wind because of the convertible. We do have a 3/4 ton pickup........but we just HAVE TO hook up the Buick.
Your Olds was a fine and beautiful car for you but I believe for you you 'traded up'.

MrUKToad, sometimes I wish I felt cars were simply a way to get from A to B. But, yes, the car bug got me long ago. Honestly, I think I was born with it. When I was about 9, I saw a Mustang in the paper and I remember crying and carrying on to my father that we just had to get it. By the way, we weren't brought up especially spoiled (like I really thought I needed a car at 9), I just really felt that passionate about cars.

Robert Cross, What a beautiful car. Had it since new? I understand!

Melody Ranch, are these your cars? I begged my husband for a Nomad or the like for my 'mom' car after my son was born. Could you imagine that showing up at the soccer games?

Neil, LOVE the Buick. Don't change a thing. You folks are a vision! I'm sure people love seeing the Buick and AS together. I know I sure appreciate it!

To you all, thank you for sharing your car pics and stories. Keep them coming if you will! I'll never forget the way that car made me feel, cruising with the top down, turning heads. But now someone else is enjoying it. It's going to a 16 year old kid who I'm sure couldn't sleep last night because he was too excited about his new ride. Hopefully, he won't wrap it around a pole.

So sorry to read of your loss. We recently parted with a stellar '70 El Camino big block, rebuilt, ground up, by my husband. Cannot believe he parted with something as long as we've been together...the dawg and I are running for cover hoping we're not next!

Give your new Airstream a few trips and you'll be amazed at how much fun you'll have and how many new friends you'll acquire! Keep the memories of the Bold Olds, and make new ones in your aluminum home!

You can feel sad about the car and happy about the Airstream at the same time. Life's changes can be hard and mixed feelings are the usual result.

I've had 3 convertibles and I miss them all even though they all broke down a lot and cost me a lot of repair money. My Toyotas have been really dull, but are dependable and practical. Getting older leads to these decisions.

Our one extravagance has been the Airstream and we use and enjoy it a lot. Just like the convertibles, it is not always dependable and costs a lot. I'm unsure what this all means.

Come to think about it, those undependable women I knew decades ago were costly too.

OK, I regret not posting my Skylark pictures yesterday... while we're lamenting what we've given up, I might as well join in fully. I even had the original owner's manual, Protect-O-Plate and other docs that came with the car when it was originally sold. This is what it looked like when I put it on the market. It sure was nice, but sometimes tough choices must be made.

Again, do not feel too sorry for me, I have this waiting in the garage. I haven't driven it much so I haven't become attached to it even though we've owned it for about 6 years. I worked on it up until my pregnant belly got too big and was in the way. I have new interior waiting to be installed then I can roll!


Also, notice no one is lamenting about their lost Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Long live American Muscle!

Not quite. Two of my convertibles were 1960's British sports cars.
