Toyota suspends sales...

...of 8 models after accelerator pedals keep sticking. ABC News story

Quote:
Toyota dealers across the country have been instructed not to sell the 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2008-2010 Sequoia, and certain 2007-2010 Camry models.
Heads up to those who own them.

Well that certainly is good news - NOT! Guess I'll be stuck at Catalina State park N of Tucson for the duration. Can think of worse places.

hi moe'

long time no post.

that's one big deal happening now for toyota...

very hard to blame it on floor mats with so many diverse models involved.

looks like it could be related to the drive by wire system/s,

it will be interesting to watch their people FIND the problem/s.
_________

the suspending of NEW sales is an even bigger issue than the recall.

i purchased my first audi RIGHT after the 60 minutes expo' on what came to be known as...

"unintended acceleration"

it was the perfect time to buy one because prices and sales TANKED...

and because if/when i reported ANYTHING with the slightest issue...

they'd just replace LOTS of parts and give me free loaners...

i've been driving their cars ever since!

and the phrase unintended acceleration has been a 4 rings cult marketing thing ever since...

as in gimme one WITH somma'than UNintended GO power...
__________

ok back to the toyota warning, ALL the newer tundras and hihos are included...

tow'rs be aware!

cheers

You got that right 2air! Must have been pretty serious to suspend sales...will be interesting to see how long the "suspension" lasts...and what they determine caused the problem.

Re; the Audi...I think it was the customers that suspended sales Thay never did find a "cause" did they? Sure did like those full size Quattro turbo sedans...Pearl White...could not afford one Tom

So a question. What are you 2007-2010 Tundra owners going to do? Stop driving until whenever or hope it doesn't happen to you and keep going? Think I'm going to do the latter - being a fulltimer its kinda hard to stop driving. And then it only happens rarely......................

I think I'll go have a FOMOCO "thermal event" now.

hi tom

yep the pearl white IS pretty, i had one of those for years.

the 60min' thang was largely DISCREDITED over the following 2 years...

as more data and understanding about what did/did not happen to the cars/owners was un-folded...

and sales fell to only a few 1000 cars in the usa, audi almost left the north american market completely.

of course cbs' NEVER reported the follow-up "whoops we jumped to conclusions, never mind..." even in the reruns...

the ONE good system/change that came out of it (for all brands) was the "depress brake pedal to shift tranny" thing...
________

for current toyota drivers who KEEP driving the vehicles IN question ...

-make damn sure the brakes work and your legs are STRONG...

-if towing, make sure the trailer brakes are WORKING and can be used to help STOP the entire rig...

and no tail gating!

without a solution what are the dealers gonna do, except suggest owners REMOVE the floor mats...

or stop driving them till a solution is found.

cheers

Yeah, I wasn't going to say 'neener neener' because I have one of those highly flammable Fords!

But I might go ahead and take the Highlander off my list of 'potential' replacement vehicles. No point in exchanging one hazard for another! Could I have something that's NOT part of a deadly recall next time?

the recall is blown out of proportions as so many things these days in the media...

toyota is doing the right thing by recalling/suspending...

however from what i read the problem is not dangerous, just step on the brakes...

anyway, now is the time to buy a toyota and maybe some stock too...

Two things:

First, slap the vehicle into neutral. This will stop the acceleration. It won't overrev with modern engine controls.

Then stand on the brakes. Don't pump them. If you pump them during full-throttle acceleration, you'll lose brake assist (as the throttle is wide open) and thus braking capability.

Keep the ignition on so that you retain power steering.

And an irony of the Audi: the most desirable Audis of the time were quattros - which were all manuals...

If yours does do this, I'd shift into neutral and let the engine hit the rev limiter while you still have power steering and brakes to get stopped and pulled over. In the old days before electronic ignition, the engine would just self-destruct, but you still had many seconds to get stopped.

Turning the key off may be a bad idea--years ago, I had an automatic-transmission equipped Chevy engine die going down a hill with a curve at the bottom to a stop sign at a cross-traffic highway. Thank God for a straight section of road and manually-activated electric travel trailer brakes because power steering died immediately and the vacuum-boosted power brakes went shortly thereafter.

Just a few thoughts... [edit: and I see Tom beat me to it]

You must not have heard the cell phone call in California where a passenger called 911 as they were experiencing the stuck throttle abd coould not get it or the car stopped...I beleive the whole family was killed.

NO WAY they would have suspended for a theoretical problem...after blaming on the floormat they must have REAL concerns. If they thought it was "not dangerous" they would have handled in a different manner. I am not aware of "suspension" of sales in other cases? Tom R

i agree don't be afraid to SHIFT into neutral and stand on the brakes!
____________

yep, all the A cars i owned early on were quattro/sticks and FUN to shift...

till more recent years when the stick has not been available on n.a. cars on my plate...
_____________

the problem is NOT knowing if/when this zoom zoom is gonna happen, and ALL of the counter measures...

are NOT things drivers normalyl practice or do routinely.

i'd park it and drive something else OR ask the dealer for ANY model not on the list as a loaner...

get'em while they got some cars to loan!

cheers

Sheesh, what's a guy to do? GM and Chrysler might not be in business in a year or two, Toyo's don't know how to stop & Fords turn into Roman candles in the driveway. I have have 5 Fords in my driveway right now. Think I'll stick with them. No flames yet.

I hope when you say you turn the ignition off you mean you park them until a fix is made Kim because if you turn off the ignition you won't have the Power boost for your brakes and steering.
Park them!
