Tortured tin - ugly Airstreams

I figured we might as well start another list of Airstreams abused, neglected and most horribly mutilated. Here are the first 2 offerings - both currently on e-bay, a stenciled Argosy and a homemade 5th wheel. So sad.

The view from the front window of that "5th wheel " must be spectacular. Sad, indeed. On another note, a member of our unit sustained some hail damage and covered each dent with a silver metallic star. It actualy looked quite unique. Kind of like making the best of a bad situation.

Taste is a very personal thing.

I find the gooseneck contraption horrible; real beauty mismatched with terrible ugliness.

But the American Star Argosy is very cool. It would be even neater with a denim interior.

At least the Argosy could be fixed with a coat of paint, if you aren't a screamin' Evil Knievel fan, but that Tradewind could only be helped if it was pushed off a cliff.

I'll second that motion. If you want a wild read - check out the sales pitch that goes with the 5th wheel ebay posting. The guy wants $42,000 for this beauty.. hurry hurry.

From the ad:

Vehicle Description
If you are seeing this then God brought you here because this is One of a Kind.... A 1974 25' Airstream Tradewind Land Yacht with a custom built 5th wheel hitch with a steel under carriage that runs the length of the trailer. I had the 5th wheel carriage custom made because 1st; Airstream trailers are second to none, and 2nd; there is no substitute for 5th wheel towing. Towing ball hitch is nowhere near as smooth as towing with a 5th wheel. Those who tow know this. Look around. You won't find a 5th wheel Airstream anywhere on planet earth except right here. It has Air Conditioning, Self leveling electric jacks, a DirecTV Sat. dish with Tivo box, 20" Polaroid LCD Swivel Television. It has an open kitchen for either a love seat sofa, or kitchenette table. This isn't for just anyone. People who know will understand the reason why this thing is amazing and worth the price. IT IS A 5th WHEEL AIRSTREAM !!! Case Closed. God brought you here....have Faith..call me if you want more details about the trailer or to hear about the bigger picture. James @ 978.807.9106 It’s funny how many angry emails I am getting because I referenced God in my description of the trailer. As unbelievable as it is to some of you…Yes, I have faith in God, and Yes, I believe that this trailer is worth the money, and Yes, I believe that God is going to bring this across the path of someone who loves God, Airstreams, and 5th Wheel Towing. I unashamedly Love God and I hope and pray that you will too. PS In one of the angry emails that I received, it was brought to my attention that Airstream did, in fact, make a 5th wheel Trailer. I don’t know this for sure, but it very well may be. I have never heard of or seen one before.

Actually, Shari, it doesn't look to bad! Someone put a lot of thought and skill into that one.

Shari, I like your auto-Airstream hybrid. Somebody in Forums posted a similar pic of a minivan-Airstream hybrid here 2-3 years ago. It was a Canadian licensed "unit" they saw in a parking lot in Florida.

The pictures above make the Camo Argosy seem tame.

Another painted Argosy and an Airstream boat

Here are a couple for the collection. The first one is a early 48(I think) turned into a pontoon boat. Floats are a little difficult to see.

Dwight -- That 2nd trailer doesn't have front pano windows, thus can't be an Argosy (the line that prototyped this feature in the decade before Airstream added it to the 'silver' lineup). It's an Airstream! I glanced quickly at Vintage Airstream Photo Archives and can only get close with the limited time I have this AM.

The painted one has me scratching my head - seems like the square window on the front (like my 68 has) doesn't go with the rounded window on the side (like argosys have). What is it?

A late '68 or early '69 Caravel (or GT)? Or a '68 Caravel (or GT) with a later window transplant?

Lightbulb Minuet?

dwightdi has us in a spin and maybe knows more ... Dwight? Can you stop chuckling long enough to give us some clue on source of the photo or a higher resolution on the front windows.

Stef, you got me thinking. The rear window also has rounded corners. The rear light contours aren't like anything I recognize. Looking closely at the limited resolution I can begin to detect a front pano window frame above the "tree" painted at the front. Are we looking at a Minuet with the pano window painted over? Why is why they call it 'tortured tin.' Interesting big box on the rear bumper...

Attachments:
1. '77 Argosy 20' with tail light contours same as mine
2. My '76 Argosy 24' tail lights

'kay Dwight! Fess up ... Thank you Stef & Roger.

Look close, the wing windows have been painted over. And from the taillight housing, and reflectors mounted low on the corners, as well as the color of the belly pan, I would say it is a 73 or 74 Argosy 20.

I think the one on the car looks really well done actually. The windows seem to be nicely integrated into the body. What kind of car is that?

Oldsmobile Toronado. IIRC it was 500 cubic inch front wheel drive. Similar to the drive package on the GMC motorhomes of that era.
