The passing of a legend

Muhammad Ali, 3 time heavy weight boxing champion of the world, passed away today in Arizona at age 74.

RIP champ, you were truly the greatest of all time...

I forget how fast he was in his prime, then Ill pull up some old videos and just cant believe the grace and speed of a man that size. Truly the greatest in my opinion. That jab stung bad, and he was a master at snapping it through a whole fight.

No doubt a great boxer but many Vietnam Veterans have a different memory of him.

I was not born then, so I could not tell. I'm not going to debate his stance, however, I do know that it takes a brave man to stand up for one's beliefs regardless of the (severe) consequences. Ali's impact outside the ring matches his impact inside it.

The passing of a legend

He was not just a boxer. He was very well-spoken and intelligent. I had a lot of respect for him, even during the Vietnam 'experiences' I was intimately involved in as a member of the Navy at the time.

I'm not a lover of boxing, but he was darn good at it.

The passing of a legend

As a Marine, it was my job to go where they sent me and keep my mouth shut. As a US citizen, I had to agree with Muhammad Ali, Walter Cronkite, and a host of others that we had no business in that war. This seems to be borne out by the fact that we are now fast on the way toward being trading partners and a vacation destination. Just read in the news that steps are being taken to lift the arms embargo that has been in place against Vietnam all these years! Hard for me to imagine we would ever evolve into a similar relationship with Al Qaeda. But even in 1965, I saw more similarities than differences with us and the Vietnamese. RIP Mohammad, you had it all for a while!
