I just finished reading the Long, Long, Trailer. The Georgia library system has two copies! After reading your posts, Terry, I am really looking forward to the book on your family's journey.

I thank you for your interest. At this writing I can not promise a release date on the book as it is in the ( Work In Progress Stage ) at this point.
However, If I should leave this planet unexpectedly, there are some pics out here that will tell our story.
Just one of the many perks of being brought up in a loving family that shares tough times, Good times.
I'm looking forward to sharing more with Y'all soon!

And along our way, we did make it to the Golden West Coast!...
However, we never found any Gold out there and eventually returned to New England, ( some 6 and some change years later ) in a 1947 Plymouth Woody station wagon 9 passenger six cylinder with a huge luggage rack mounted on the roof, towing a 12' U'hall... ( OH, and yet another story ) !

Our 34 day trek across the country ended on the evening of July 6, 1952 when we pulled into the Airport Trailer Village in Westchester, CA, a suburb west of Los Angeles. There was a warm welcome party at Aunt Betty and Uncle Mark's house in Westchester. We were there only a week and moved to Artesia, southeast of Los Angeles.

Side Note; There was a Take Out Restaurant at the Airport Trailer Village that had THE BEST fried Jumbo shrimp On This Planet!!

I thank you for enjoying this thread. Most of us have Clinton Twiss, and the original poster of this thread to thank!... Way back in the day, he got us wound up to hitch it Up, And GO!

Tons of tow vehicles with many combinations of trailers and lengths that we have clocked many happy miles with...

This is a fantastic website to post and share our many stories of the open road, so to speak. Most of us antiques are very happy to have survived over the many years and are still here to Blurb about it!

I am sure that there will be smooch more to come...

May I add, that my older brother Fred and I were always pretty close. He taught me how to drive a car in a local State Park back when I was six years old in his 1934 Chevy, with wooden blocks on the brake, clutch and gas peddles, so that my feet could reach them while I was also sitting on cushions so's I could see out the windshield just above the defroster vents. By the time I got to be 6.5, I could drive that car anywhere.
And, back in them days I never considered sewing the town for building the sidewalks too close to my butt either.

Many prayers were said when Fred enlisted into the Marine Corps and after boot camp served on Okinawa as a Sergeant in the Motor Pool of his unit and taught Automotive Carburetion and Ignition. He mailed me the study text & tests, I'd mail him back the tests for him to grade, then he wrote me back saying that I was in the top 99% of the classes.

AaaHHH, the good'ol days!!!!

Dang, if I'm not talkative this evening.

There comes a time for all us antiques to fess Up and admit that it is 2010...?... Us Altimers after all, have a clue to the glue.

NOW,... I thought I was good splain'in about the wooden blocks on the gas, brake and clutch peddles of the car that I learned how to drive way back in the late forties.

Recent recalls about floor mats in Toyota's causing runaway conditions, just couldn't put it together for me.

At the same time, I owned an awesome Toyota 1/2 ton 4x4, that I used to put family and friends boats in the water with when they came to visit me up at Lake Winnipesaukee towing their boats with their motor homes.

We all have some things to think deeply about these days, like kicking our Government into gear, and gett'in US, to the other side...

I can tell by overlander64's handle that he is too shy, although at the very same time a very Large influencne in the happenings and goings ON out here.

I know you have given some info on the actual trailer you guys traveled in, but it would be so interesting if you could visually paint a picture for your readers about what the inside of it looked like. Especially from a 5 year olds mind!

I read the downloaded book by Twiss and really enjoyed it!! I also was able to borrow a copy of Retire to Adventure through interlibrary loan. It was a great read. I am hooked! I tried to get Fifth Avenue but my local library could only find TWO copies and no lending library would lend it. SOOOOO..... Very happy to find out that Wally's two best sought after books are ready for purchase again. Go to the Airstream Living site and find them both together for 19.00. What a bargain!!!

I got frustrated and sent an E to the powers what be, and a very nice gentleman named Bob guided me back out here...

To try to answer your question,... this trailer was huge and only leaving the Green Monster out at Fenway Park in Boston, alowed us to progress to the left coast.

!

And for the football fans, Grogan could through a pass inside our trailer these days! [ Only kidding .]!

Thank God, we had a boss in the kitchen with a full sized fridge!

My Dad, towing the rest of us! The very Long trailer has a definite history here, and the Love that he shared was unprecedented.! Short story, Love defines us, look into the future for your loved ones.

Ya, we sold the 1949 Buick with the gusto, if you will to tow this trailer across our entire Country So we had to rely on some improvised brute to continue her onto Santa Maria. Amazing what an old Buick equipped with an straight eight engine and an dynaflow automatic transmission DID, back in them days!

Seven and a half ton under tow was not the norm in those days, as well!

On our trip west, we eventually found the desert...

Our bought used luggage trailer had a bent axle that snuck under the radar, so to speak, before we started our journey in the first place. It had some flat tires for breakfast, as I recall...
However, we pushed on and affectionately named her ' Rascal Flats '!
