SOB gets blown over

Caught on video this SOB gets blown over. Those shoe box designs don't handle strong winds very well. Guess this is one big reason we prefer towing an Airstream.

RV Videos: Trailer flips on highway as video camera rolls

Wow! I saw one this fall that flipped over into the median in New York state. The whole chassis came off......

Don't kid yourselves, it has happened with Airstreams as well. But- that was one heck of a long, boxy trailer, and the video maker had gotten clues (wind/swaying?) that it was in trouble. It whipped that truck around like a cat toy! Dam good thing there was no-one in the way of it.

I have heard these big dually's were in charge when a trailer starts to sway.

Going from 8' height to 10' height doubles the chances of tipping over due to the combination of:
- larger wall area for the wind to hit
- longer moment arm for the wind to act upon
- higher cg making the rig more tippy

Also sobs typically have leaf springs with no shocks which makes them much more susceptible to the kind of oscillations that contribute to tipping over.

It's hard to say for sure but a less than ideal wd and sway control setup may have contributed

Hi from Ga. . . If you watch that video all the way thru, you'll see a strip of other videos......one of which is a 2 axle Airstream doing the same thing ! just sayin...

I suppose the only difference had he had a Hensley would have been that the truck might have stayed aimed straight ahead as the whole works went over!

Brian

PS - we had a little 20' Sprite travel trailer we owned years ago lifted out of a car park and dumped on its side about 200 feet away by a mini-tornado.

Amazingly the trailer was lifted out from between two parked cars and never touched either!

Looks like no one was injured...

Imagine if that had been a lesser vehicle...they would have been tossed around like rag dolls...

Safety Chains sure worked. They are holding the rear of the truck off the ground.

@Jim Foster: Well, from that video you can't tell WHY the Airstream is on its side, just that it is. It could have been a failed emergency maneuver, sleepy driver, etc. as easily as a crosswind issue.

Perhaps a lesson here is you can put all the truck you want in front your trailer, but the real safety measure is good hitch rigging, safe driving habits, and recognizing some weather conditions when you should not be on the road.

I doubt it was a blow over. Looks to me like the highway has trees along side which should somewhat protect it from the wind.

In both this and the blow over video the TV is still attached to the trailer and the rear wheels are held off the ground by the hitch.

Interesting.

What a behemoth!
Talk about towing a BILLBOARD

Must have been some freak gust, because the guy walking over to assist, at the end, doesn't appear to be getting buffeted by the wind very much...

Ramblinman', you need to link the video of an airstream blowing over- I've never seen one

I got caught in a severe thunder storm in N. Dakota at dusk shortly after purchasing my 31 foot ASCL with Hensley the summer of 2001. Basis the vegetation blowing across the road in my headlights I would guestimate the 90 degree side winds to be 40 to 50+ mph and I was concerned that hail might fall (tremendous lightening show). I reduced speed to 50 mph due to visibility, but NEVER had any controllability problems; in fact the side winds affected the assembly LESS than the wake push from a passing bus. This event lasted about 10 minutes until I cleared the storm gust front.

Apparently because of the low centre of gravity and overall design an Airstream will slide sideways on dry pavement and very rarely will they roll.

My in-laws flipped their 1996 34' Airstream. It was less than six months old at the time. However, witnesses said they had some help from the tractor-trailer that clipped the back of the Airstream when merging onto the highway. The Airstream rolled three times, and the Suburban 1500 received a dent in the rear quarter panel and stayed upright. The Semi kept moving down the highway and nobody saw the tag number to call it in. The Suburban was coupled to the Airstream with a Reese W/D hitch and 1000# sway bars. The chains stayed attached as well, jus tthe ball lifted. Thor uses some strong chains on the Airstreams

Holy cow! Did they get another 'stream and get back on the road? Because I think I might switch to staying in hotels after an accident like that! Lucky lucky lucky!

At the end of the video where they show the hitch setup, it doesn't look like there was any weight distribution or sway control being used either.

We recently had a very very close call on the 93/95 just outside of Kingman. When an individual we believe was intoxicated pulled right out of a bar onto the highway in front of us. My husband only had a few seconds to react. He had to swerve to avoid hitting the car as the. The Airstream Fishtailed left to right a few times. I thought it was going over. Keep in mind we were traveling in the daytime going 55 miles per hour on flat land. The driver of the car didn't even stop to look he flew right out of the parking lot. You cant always control what is going on around you. We have a weight distribution hitch and are very very thankful we were able to pull out of that one. It may have been a lot different if we ere towing a SOB.

Be safe out there.
