Reserve America and Active Advantage Scam

I got a disturbing email the other day that at the time, I thought was a fishing scam. The email said that my credit card was being charged for some Active Advantage Membership. This was something like $70. So I wrote them back asking what was up and to cancel this membership that I had no knowledge of. After several emails I got this reply.

After checking, I found that you became trail member when you registered a Campgrounds event in ReserveAmerica on 2/23/2016.

This is absolutely crazy and needs to be stopped. I have a feeling that I was given a check box that I had to check in order to complete my registration. Clicking that check box signed be up for some scam service that bills your credit card every year. I am sure there is a healthy kick back going back to Reserve America and I would not be surprised if they don't own this Active Advantage.

Has anyone had a similar experience with this?

I just wrote a nasty letter to Reserve America. This was supposed to be a trial membership starting on 2/26/16 but I never got a welcome email on the free services I was getting. Got nothing for a year saying I signed up for something until the second year bill notice came up. Does not sound like they wanted you to use their services at all. If you search the Reserve America Sight you don't find anything about fees being charged. They make you think it is a free service and I don't know why I would have signed up for it in the first place. Very clever scam.

Call you credit card company & dispute the charge, have them cancel the card and issue a new one. The credit card co will take it up with ReserveAmerica and the cancellation of the old card will stop the auto billing.

This is a complete scam. Reserve America has included on their sing out page a So Called Trial Subscription form for a half dozen magazines that no one would ever want. Their hope is people will check Yes and forget that they did and just pay the bill, many never read what they are paying for, after the trial period.

Reserve American has established a near monopoly in the reservation field and is running the risk of damaging their reputation by such fraudulent activities.

The same thing happened to me a year or so ago. I e-mailed ReserveAmerica and they refunded my money. I don't know how I got signed up, I had the same impression as perryg114 that I had to check OK to get my reservation confirmed, but the next time I used them I scrolled through the magazine offer without checking anything and found the reservation confirmation checkbox at the bottom of the page. I do it routinely now, but it does appear that they are being somewhat deceptive in the way that the page is presented.

Pays to read the small print. They are counting on the fact that most people do not.

Reserve America and cancellation fees

I cancelled a campground reservation that was previously booked thru Reserve America (no other option). When I made said reservation I printed the confirmation as well as kept it on my phone. The cancellation policy states a $10 cancellation fee if cancelled more than 24 hours and $10 + 1 night if cancelled less than 24 hours before arrival. I cancelled more than 48 hours prior but was charged $25! Of course I dint see any option on their website to dispute this and when I called several times throughout the day the number just rings & rings & rings.

Wondering how often fellow campers just pay the odd amount just to avoid the hassle of trying to contact a real person/representative. Suggestions?

I agree totally. Reserve America has very cleverly instilled the subscription in the middle of the reservation completion causing many to accidentally subscribe to something they do not want. I am quite careful finishing the reservation as I also note they additionally are cleaver in making it sound like you are finishing the reservation rather than adding an additional subscription. I believe the campgrounds using Reserve America demand this subscription be immediately taken out of the reservation process. This is a very deceitful practice !
I would love to know who owns this company so I could send them my thoughts.

Active.com Owns ReserveAmerica

ACTIVE purchased ReserveAmerica from IAC in 2009 to extend their offerings to campground booking services. Active was acquired by a private equity firm, VISTA Equity Partners for 1 Billion dollars in 2013.

According to Outsideonline.com: "In September 2013, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office agreed to a $250,000 settlement with Active for what it deemed as “stealth enrollments.” As part of the settlement, Active was able to deny liability even while refunding some 9,500 Iowans for unwanted charges. The company did agree to comply with Iowa’s notice and disclosure laws; it must clearly disclose membership fees to would-be membership purchasers and contact Iowa consumers who fail to use any of their membership benefits at least once every 12 months."

According to TopClassActions.com: "The Active Network Inc. has agreed to pay $1.25 million to settle allegations that the company deceptively charged membership fees to individuals using their website Active.com, in violation of California state law." The settlement went into effect Jan 13, 2017.

Both the CA and IA suits were similar in that the plaintiffs purchased the memberships through an Auto Opt In feature in the registration software which obfuscated the true nature of the charges and the "service" they were subscribing to.

Who owns Active.com now?

IN Sept 2017, Global Payments acquired the communities and sports divisions of the ACTIVE Network from Vista Equity Partners for about $1.2 billion.

ACTIVE Network is a Dallas-based provider of cloud activity and participant management software.

From the Global Payments website:

Jeffrey S. Sloan is the Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Global Payments Inc. (NYSE:GPN), one of the largest worldwide providers of payment technology and software solutions. He is a decisive leader with deep industry knowledge and 25 years of experience in financial technology. Mr. Sloan joined Global Payments as President in 2010 and became Chief Executive Officer in 2013.

William I Jacobs
Chairman
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Jacobs served as Senior Executive Vice President for MasterCard International where he was responsible for developing new business ventures to service a wider range of member needs. He was also responsible for all alliances, joint ventures, new investments and equity investments.

Mr. Jacobs previously held the position of Executive Vice President for MasterCard Global Resources where his responsibilities included administration, government affairs, audit, finance, analysis, legal, human resources and global communications. At Global Resources, he was also involved in corporate finance and M&A activities.

Maybe more like a consequence of privatization.

Signed up for Active when I reserved a campsite, because I could “supposedly” I could save on Florida fishing license and other things bought in Florida parks. I bought a fishing license and rented a kayak in a wildlife area. Both were rejected by Active because I was still in my “trial” month. It was the free introductory month. I’ve already cancelled before charged.
