Everyone's mileage will vary - no judgement here!

I have the same problem with beer... I completely quit for eight years, and limit myself now to when and how many. The "only on days ending in y" thing comes way too easily for me.

Luckily, when I do drink, I'm a REALLY happy drunk. The downside is I get incredibly handsome, and women have a hard time keeping their butts off my hands... So, yeah, I avoid going there. It saves me a lot of embarrassment and apologizing...

My Doc, who is my cousin, told me to get back in shape or I would shorten my lifespan by 20 years or more.

I said "Kurt, you've seen our older relatives. They're in their late eighties, and they are all HUGE."

So, I'm guessing none of them are going to make much past 100.

As for the smoking, I quit for 2 months after my by-pass surgery. (You really do not want to cough or sneeze at that time.) That should count for something.

Dies at 102... Relative at funeral: "If only they had exercised..."

Just keep moving. As long as you're moving, you're not dead!

-Red, still moving...

My brother's wife had a heart attack today. They have her heart beating again, but in a coma. Not sure of the damage. Prayers are appreciated... Not quite fifty yet. Too young to go...

-Red, hurting a bit...

Sorry to hear that, Red. Thoughts and wishes to her for a speedy recovery.

Doug always said he could start up smoking again in an instant. He never stopped lusting for them.

He would get a whif of cigarette smoke from someone nearby and say "I could snatch that right out of their hand."

It's an addiction, like any other.

Panama Red, on your first #253, I agree. I work with a group of people where there are mostly left leaners, some way left. I am right along with one other person. We can hold all kinds of discussions and agree what the issues are etc. We get along and work well together. But, what is interesting is when you try to focus on a cause or reason for something everything becomes blurred and the "sides" show up.

One thing is certain. Years ago a curriculum was started in the public schools, first in the urban area of Los Angeles, then across the country. The first to reap the impact of the teaching was LA. Originally their goal was to teach children to be respectful of other cultures. What happened was increased gang violence and more separation. In a symposium it was proposed that in teaching about the "differences" of the American subcultures, they failed to teach how we were all alike. The curriculum was called Multiculturalism and is still very much a part of public school today.

Old farts, its your duty to help young people see how we are alike. We are a culture that separates young from old, racial, etc. not good. The one thing that SHOULD link us behaviorally at least is respectful responsibility and even that is being attacked.

Politics? Speakers can unite or divide a people. Both ways are considered art forms in public speaking and, there are even jobs associated with both. Luminaries usually inspire people to a common goal as a whole into a single focused point. They say we a lot. Organizers divide people by focusing them on their own special interest goals then lead them forward as a whole, usually not to meet any group's goals but rather use the mass to excerpt their own agenda. They use I and you a lot and blame others.

Ok, nuf on philosophia, your post inspired me! Have you ever thought of running for public office? You already have a parade vehicle- that peddler with the white rimmed tires and the coon tail!

Thanks to everyone for the prayers and well wishes and good thoughts. I promised I would update everyone as I got any news. This was my brothers Facebook post this morning. Thanks again. Y'all are an awesome group of people... He had requested people text him their favorite bible verse that helps them through the hopelessness of something like this. The doctors had her in a coma with her body temp reduced to 91 degrees to try and lessen the neurological damage. Her heart was beating 10 percent on it's own as of last night. They've warmed her back up overnight.

"Thank you so much for the scriptures. I prayed each one of them over her this morning while holding her hand. I can honestly say that I haven't felt more at peace since Tuesday as when I was reading the scriptures that everyone sent me. My prayer is that you also receive God's blessing as you read them as well. I plan on saving this thread and reading to Alina when she is awake. May it glorify the Lord as to his wonderful faithfulness. Please as you come across them keep sending them to me. As for an update she is warmed up but still under sedation and in very critical condition. Her heart is now beating without the assistance of the pacemaker, but still receiving assistance by the balloon pump on every other beat. Just now as the nurse was attending to her she opened her eyes. That is the first real sign of consciousness she has shown. I praise God that it is a sign of her full recovery and that I was here to see her and comfort her during those brief moments. Thank you and God bless."

Thanks again to everyone on here. Sorry for the buzzkill...

I honest to goodness was passed by a local sheriff deputy that was TEXTING while I was driving home today... Dude! I'm not wearing my seatbelt, and if you run into me, I'll spill my beer.

But seriously, if he saw me texting and driving, what would the fine be? $200? $300? I'm a big supporter of law enforcement, but this totally irritated me. I should have called him on it... Like that wouldn't get my name on a list anywhere.

-Red, agitated...
