Maggie, we wish for you the most positive outcome in all this. Very difficult for you and your family, I know. I bought my first DO because of you and your love for baking and your posts, so my first loaf ever at Alumalina is dedicated to you and Doug...however that may turn out....

Maggie,
Our thoughts and prayers are focused on Doug, you and your family. While we haven't yet met in this very special community, we feel we know you through your posts. Keep the faith and stay strong in the small comfort this great group of people offer.

A quick post to let everyone know that Doug was removed from life support and died late this afternoon.
He received excellent care at this hospital and we received compassionate support and services as we dealt with this dreadful event.
We are 1500 miles from home, and the first thing I must do is get he and I back there.
Doug will be buried next to his Dad in the Grace Hill Cemetery, next to the Grace Hill Moravian Church, near Washington, Iowa, where Doug was born and raised. The funeral service will also be there, late next week.
Doug remembers attending this church as a small child when his family lived "in the country", before they "moved to town". No electricity there, then nor now, a well out back where water was pulled in a wooden bucket, then used with a metal dipper for a cold drink by anyone who needed it. No longer in use, but for occasions such as this, it will be perfect.
I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of care and concern from all our friends and fellow travelers here. Thank you so much for all the posts, pm's and emails.
For those who want "to do something", we are going to have any who wishes to do memorials to do that thru the House of Hope here that provided us with shelter, support and guidance during this difficult time.
We think it would be lovely if something tangible that they needed for the patients, families and stranded travelers such as us could be provided in Doug's memory. Wouldn't it? I'll post something on how to do that once we have an obituary pulled together.
Thank you again for all the love, kindness, support, offers of help, etc. They are gratefully appreciated.
Maggie and family
