Post Eclipse photos, Venus transit

Okay, this is central Minnesota at 8:00PM CDT. Pretty sad...

C'mon southwest states!

Attached photo taken with iPhone after projecting image through a 7X50 Pentax binocs onto a plain piece of paper. Far from the optimal image capture.

Do me up! Do me proud!!

NorCal 6:30pm note the sun through the leaves making crescent patterns on the house. Large image is eclipse projected on ceiling with telescope. Looked pretty spooky outside.

Brad -- Liked these! Especially the 4th image you posted!

Ever hear of the Bellin family in Fairmont? The dad, Floyd Bellin, was the state ag extension agent there in the 70s & 80s. His children are my wife's cousins.

That name sounds very familiar cause I was in Rutland 4H in the 70s Northrop and Fairmont-but I'll have to ask my sister who is older and still there (Bingham Lake MN). She remembers everything .. yah you bet!

The sun was so low in the P.M. that all could be seen was a small fingernail crescent silhouette at the bottom of our star. Then to top that off - clouds drifted right in front of everything up there and closed the curtains on the show too early. But here's a fun video.

Better luck with the next one!

What eclipse? Was clouded over and rainy.

Of course it was. It's the Victoria Day long weekend - the unofficial opening of camping season.

No sun on the Island either.
Did you get your trailer back for the long weekend to test in the rain?

In Phoenix, we had about an 80% eclipse. Solar eclipse pictures are not easy to take. Special filters are needed and I have none. Lunar eclipse pictures are much easier.

This is a shop using the pin hole method. Not easy because the camera wants to focus on the paper which is a few feet away and not on the sun which is considerably further away.

This is a random shot I took of the partially eclipsed suns reflection on a side window of my Airstream. The sun is bright and round, but if you look above and to the left of the sun, you see the eclipsed sun. I don't know how this happened, but I think it is pretty cool.

Venus transit

The very small silhouette of Venus required a setup better than my handheld binocs for the solar eclipse. I'm using eyepiece projection with only one side of my ol' 7x50 Pentax binoculars.

It was cool seeing the 4 sunspots arranged like the Summer Triangle. And Venus was so crisp and sharp. Gotta find that annoying wandering cable to download the pics from my compact camera. Until then the iPhone totally rots ... the focus is just too problematic for the wonderPhone.

[iPhone pic deleted. Just didn't cut the mustard!]

Welcoming anyone's pictures. I'll post my camera shots tomorrow.

Venus transit pics

Okay, got this done. I must have taken about two dozen shots from which maybe three were fine enough to show the sunspots -- standard photography outcome even for a day on the beach. No way I was going to handhold this like the eclipse photo! I used the camera timer so there would be minimal shake. Not bad for a quick 20 minute setup.

The best shot with sunspots in a triangle formation:

Inset on the sunspots; slightly sharpened (yes, there were dark central areas on somewhat larger patches of gray):

And with the sun settling into cirrus near the horizon, it was time to plan for the next Venus transit in 117 years... yeah, right.

By looking at these photos, one can only imagine just how VAST and un ending the universe actually is....really opens the mind. Well - guess I gonna pop down to the 7-11 and get a slurpee.

Partial Eclipse May 2012

This shot was taken from aboard a sunset catamaran cruise off Puerto Peņasco, MX in the the Sea of Cortez ... as the sun set over the Baja Peninsula...during our most recent trip to MX with the Bambi ... quite a sight...
