PC Experts--I need help
My new laptop came with a 60 day subscription to Norton anti-virus. My subscription on my desktop also expired this month. I purchased a subscription for up to three computers to cover my laptop, the kids desktop and my wife's laptop. It took several attempts to get the software to download and load up completely on my wife's laptop. I can't seem to get it to load up completely on my laptop.
The icon on the bar at the bottom of the screen has an "X" on it, and when I click on it, I get a pop-up that says the Norton isn't configured. When I try to open the Norton main window, the software goes into configuration mode but doesn't open the main window. No mater how I try to get to the main window, the configuration starts. I have removed and reinstalled the software, including re-downloading the program at least four times. I have requested help from Norton but haven't got a response (since yesterday).
Any suggestions?

I just went through this with my wife's computer. She had let her subscription lapse about 3 months ago. Last weekend she opened an unknown E-mail and the trouble started. Everything slowed down - it was obvious that she had a virus. I downloaded Spybot free version, cleaned out the viruses, deleted the earthlink antivirus program and bought a new subscription to McAfee for $39.99.
The product described full coverage for three users - not three computers. I believe this means three seperate users - IP adresses on the same computer, not three seperate computers. Read the print carefully and the call the company.

I am NO PC expert, but I drove by a Holiday Inn Express last night.
I know Norton used to have a 24 hour help line. No charge. I got some guy in India or some such faraway place who knew his stuff. I am sorry I have no idea of the number, but I must have found it on the norton site somewhere. My issues were different than yours, but he walked me thru everything and had much patience. Of course i called him at about 3 in the morning my time. It was hard to get thru earlier as I recall.
Best of Luck
BTW I like Norton but they have way too many packages in the retail stores. I never know which is which. Also some geeks I know say they wont use either McAfee or Norton because it has too many bells & whistles installed onto a computer. Not sure why they feel that way.

I would follow Wheel's advice and read up at Norton's support site. I bought BitDefender (not recommending it), and I had to reference their web site to get it to install on Vista. There were some special instructions posted there.
Enjoy, isn't it fun

OK forget the norton go to programs and take it out.
replace with free avg , I have used it for many many years now and it is great.
www.grisoft.com or AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista go down the page click free than continue with free.
download the free edition it works like a dream, and FREE! FREE is always good. Mabye install this first then you will ahve a green yellow red blue sq in your tray when it is working , then take out norton. I hate norton as it does not always get rid of viruses and this program will.

I wish Norton could read this. Once Norton went to "india" they have rapidly gone down hill. I used to use it for "backup", but once you exceed one CD to back up it won't work any longer. Have been through Norton India support, I would say, 4 times and still won't work. I need to find a new source for firewall, antivirus and so forth. The problem you are having can probably be solved via India, where they may have to take over your computer to do so. My anti-virus runs fine, on 5 computers, but no Norton backup, I have to do it manually on some machines, micrsoft backup on others. I don't know if India does their product development now, but my guess is their engineering budget went down, the product just doesn't work very well any longer. Again, do the internet service wait, where you should have something else to do while you wait as it takes a while, and my guess is they will get you running. Hmmm, a moral to the story here?

I'm with you guys, I don't care for Norton anymore. I have the 3 copy deal for 2 years on Bit Defender and the AVG free on an older machine and they are effortless and do the job. Norton is annoying at best these days and charges you royally for the privilege of having your machine taken hostage. I had to run the tool to get rid of it.

Me too. After two months of trouble I got my money back.
Have had no issues with CA Security.
Am a little surprised that Norton hasn't been able to correct the concerns yet.
It was kind'a fun jerk'n the Indians around though.... What part of NY are you from?

I used Norton for years. Once I noticed my computer was slowing down abit I did some research and discovered that Norton goes so deep within the system that it was clogging up my system. I now have downloaded the free AVG, love it love it. All my geek friends recommended it and I couldn't be more satisfied. Once your SOB subscription runs out, try AVG. Easy to download and is non invasive.
NOT lost in the sixties and grateful for it. ..

Thanks everybody. I was able to get it downloaded successfully on my wife's laptop and on the kid's PC. My wife's laptop is virtually identical to mine, only one year older. I have uninstalled it several times using the install utility that is part of the installation process. Last night after getting frustrated, I thought maybe I should do the uninstall again and remove the check marks from the retain existing Norton settings and see if that will make a difference. If that doesn't work, I'll try customer support again. Maybe if I get this Indian guy in my office to say a Hindu prayer over it it might start working...or maybe the Hindu prayer over the email might help.
