Overloaded tow vehicle

Does anybody remember the Brady Bunch trip to the Grand Canyon episode?
I have some questions:
How did all nine of them fit in that station wagon? Remember they brought Alice along.
How is it that they hauled all those people, a pop-up camper, luggage for nine, and all the camping equipment?

On this website, if you mention towing an Airstream with anything besides a 3/4 ton truck, you better put on your flame suit.

They had a death wish? Oh right, it was a TV SHOW.

You know I often wondered why I couldn't jump my car like the Duke Boys did and still have a car in one piece.

If it was on TV or on Internet, it has to be accurate, right?

The Duke boys had multiple copies of the General Lee. Several are in Cooter’s museum. A couple of them totally wrecked on landing the jump. That’s why you see the same jump so many times. It was still a great ensemble cast show!!

The Brady Bunch didn’t take their convertible on that trip? Oh, wait, I’m thinking of The Long Long Trailer.

The Brady Bunch should have called The Partridge Family and borrowed their bus!

I am also skeptical about how KITT and Michael Knight could just jump without a ramp by pushing the Turbo Boost button.
I'm starting to worry that my entire childhood was a lie.
Next thing you know, people are going to start telling me that roadrunners really aren't that fast.

I love busting that myth...
Imagine, if you will, a bird the size of a anorexic chicken, that in days of yore, easily kept up or beat a rider on horseback or Miss Kitty in the stagecoach. It deserved it's title of "Roadrunner" then. Nowadays, from the birds perspective, people cheat and ride in/on wheeled vehicles powered by something other than sheer muscle power. Tsk.

Oh yeah.. they also don't go beepbeep. Sorry. :-)

Well we had a 9 passenger Plymouth station wagon, no seat belts, no headrests, for 7 of us, including grandma; plenty of room.

Dad hooked up a borrowed cage trailer and loaded it up with a 30 HP outboard, all the luggage, fishing gear and skiing equipment. Off we went to Michigan every summer for 2 weeks, no problem.

Road Runners have nothing on these three legged chickens!

A man was driving down a backroad when he noticed a chicken running alongside his car. He was amazed to see the chicken keeping up with him, as he was doing 60 mph. He accelerated to 70, and the chicken stayed right next to him. He sped up to 75 mph, but the chicken overtook him.

Then the man noticed that the chicken had three legs. So he followed the chicken, speeding all the way, and ended up at a farm. He got out of his car and saw that all the chickens on the farm had three legs.

When he spotted the farmer he asked him, "Where did you get these chickens?"

The farmer replied "Well, everybody likes eating chicken legs, so I bred me a three-legged bird! I'm going to be a millionaire."

The man was impressed and asked him how they tasted. The farmer said, "Don't know, I haven't caught one yet."

Million years ago, when I was an Apprentice Mechanic, we had a good customer who was an accountant... and he had NINE kids! He had this more-than-well-used Kingswood Estate wagon, and came in for gas one afternoon all loaded up, before heading out for a trip. Car was down on its bump stops, looked like what today we'd call a 'low-rider'. If that poor, sad, old thing could have talked, it would have said, 'Help me...!'

About a week later, he's limping in alone with more than a few things nearly broken from the distance and the overload. We put the car on the lift, I was under with a light and inspection tools. I'm looking at stuff like wrecked u-joints, leaking axle seals, listening to the rear axle's ominous noises... and was about to put a straightedge on the frame. Guy was nearby, talking quietly with the boss.

The boss stopped me in mid-inspection, told me to put the car on the ground.

Two days later, the guy's wife drove in with a new(er) Suburban, to get gas.

Ha!
They "just did it!"
Nine people in a pop-up?
I'd have jumped.

Their seating plan could have used some tweaking for better load distribution:
1. Leave Alice at home, and let Sam the butcher bring her the meat.
2. Move Cindy and Bobby to the back seat, put Peter in between Mike and Carol, with Greg, Jan and Marcia occupying the middle row.
3. Make sure everything on the roof is either as far forward as possible or in the trailer over the axle.

I suppose some weight distribution bars on a pop-up camper would seem ridiculous, but so was that show. Still loved it though.

The Long Long Trailer is a favorite around here. I think the tongue weight on that trailer was about 200 lbs.

I wish National Lampoon made a version of the Long Long Trailer!

If you look closely at some of the shots, you can see little dolly wheels near the front of the trailer. I wonder if those are Goodyear's

Nice catch, I was thinking they had to have modified the car's suspension in order to be as level as it is. I see they decided to go the other way and support the trailer.

As was noted earlier by AZFLYCASTER, it’s called a Slimp Dolly. Look here for another thread on it:
