speaking of different contexts

It was a sad day to hear of the passing of Charlie Watts.

I grew up in the SF bay area in the late 60's and had the opportunity to see a lot of music. Thank you Bill Graham and others. I was (still am) a Dead Head but CCR, Santana, Doobies, Dan Hicks were all locals garage bands who broke thru. Musically we were pretty spoiled. Winterland was 3 Bucks for three bands...often 3 headliners. Loved the Stones but never saw them live.

However in 93 (about) my wife and I caught Charlie Watts Quintet at the SF Design Center. It was a 4 (?) story brick structure that had an open atrium in the center and design vendors around the edges. Couldn't have been more than 500 people there...a few chairs but mostly folks standing along the open railing looking down at the band. Of course a few bars scattered around the edges.

He had just released Warm and Tender, which I always referred to as "Brushes" which was the image on the disc. Seems to fit.

The band started to play and all of a sudden the roof skylight opened up. I huge glass skylight that slid parted in the center and opened on most of the atrium section below. The band and the brushes didn't skip a beat.

The Design Center was a little S of Market in an area of SF that often had clear fog-less sky's and no wind. I guess that was why they had the skylight...a perfect weather night in SF not known for short sleeve weather. Charlie and his band was awesome.

Thank you Charlie Watts. RIP

Good tunes Brian and Bob!

I missed Nanci's passing, which happened around the time that I had a massive brain lesion seizure, and ended up in a rehab facility for a couple of months. I am now in an assisted living facility.

She does such a great job on John Prine's classic number IMO.

"Throwing Rocks at the Moon" -- Carrie Newcomer

A nice new tune and video from Carrie Newcomer.

"She was staring out the kitchen door
She closed her eyes as I crossed the floor
In the last embers of the day
She said 'I'm bone tired of bein' brave . . . bein' brave'
We piled it up, and we lit a match
Let it all burn down to smoke and ash
. . .
But it seems I've been throwing, just throwing, rocks at the moon"

The full lyrics are not available now, it appears.

Thanks J. Nelson. Yes a great "Summer Wages" from Nanci there!

"No Hard Feelings" -- The Avett Brothers

Well this "somber numbers" thread is certainly a good home for this one from the Avett Brothers IMO.

https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/avet...dfeelings.html

"When my body won't hold me anymore
And it finally lets me free
Will I be ready?
When my feet won't walk another mile
And my lips give their last kiss goodbye
Will my hands be steady?

When I lay down my fears
My hopes and my doubts
The rings on my fingers
And the keys to my house
With no hard feelings

When the sun hangs low in the west
And the light in my chest
Won't be kept held at bay any longer
When the jealousy fades away
And it's ash and dust for cash and lust
And it's just hallelujah
And love in thoughts and love in the words
Love in the songs they sing in the church
And no hard feelings

Lord knows they haven't done
Much good for anyone
Kept me afraid and cold
With so much to have and hold

When my body won't hold me anymore
And it finally lets me free
Where will I go?
Will the trade winds take me south
Through Georgia grain or tropical rain
Or snow from the heavens?

Will I join with the ocean blue
Or run into the savior true
And shake hands laughing
And walk through the night
Straight to the light
Holding the love I've known in my life
And no hard feelings

Lord knows they haven't done
Much good for anyone
Kept me afraid and cold
With so much to have and hold
Under the curving sky
I'm finally learning why
It matters for me and you
To say it and mean it too
For life and its loveliness
And all of its ugliness
Good as its been to me
I have no enemies
I have no enemies
I have no enemies
I have no enemies"

Sorry if these are a bit much . . . have a good weekend.

"Leaving Paradise" -- Monte Montgomery

Fine numbers there . . . thanks J. Nelson and Bob.

Peter

"Given a time, given a place
savor each moment you can’t replace
do what you can to keep alive
’cause time has a way of passin’ you by

The sound of my voice, whispers your name
with perfect timing, you shudder your shame
enlisting fragrants and tendencies too,
kiss like an angel like angels do

I know there’s only one life
you’ve got live it or kiss it goodbye
look over your shoulder, don’t ask why
I can’t say so long to paradise

Fleeting romances they come and they go
like wandering gypsies in a traveling show
they do what they can, just to survive
’cause time has a way of passin’ them by

And I miss you today just like yesterday
i’m never without you when your miles away
as far as redemption I could use some too
but that’s not as likely as the sky is blue

I know there’s only one life
you’ve got to live it or kiss it goodbye
look over your shoulder don’t ask why
I can’t say so long to paradise

So sleep well tonight and save me a place
dream of a moment you can’t replace
do what you can just to survive
’cause time has a way of passin’ you by

Do all that you can to keep it alive
’cause time has a way of passin' you . . by"

PS -- Bob Cross . . . your W. H. Auden quote in another thread keeps echoing in my brain.

"Music can be made anywhere, is invisible and does not smell."
W. H. Auden

Found this interesting collection of his wit and wisdom -- FWIW.

"Let the music breathe!"

Cheers,

Peter

Nice video for this cover of the classic, which closed out the final episode of Bosch featured in Posts #751 and #754.

Nice . . . thanks.

"I cannot say that I know you well
But you can't lie to me with all these books that you sell
I'm not trying to follow you to the end of the world
I'm just trying to leave something behind

Words have come from men and mouths
But I can't help thinking that I've heard the wrong crowd
When all the water is gone my job will be too
And I'm trying to leave something behind

Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
Oh the future ahead is broken and red
But I'm trying to leave something behind

This whole world is a foreign land
We swallow the moon but we don't know our own hand
We're running with the case but we ain't got the gold
Yet we're trying to leave something behind

My friends I believe we are at the wrong fight
And I cannot read what I did not write
I've been to His house, but the master is gone
But I'd like to leave something behind

There is a beast who has taken my brain You can put me to bed but you can't feel my pain
When the machine has taken the soul from the man
It's time to leave something behind

Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
Oh the future ahead is already dead
So I'm trying to leave something behind

I got this feeling that I'm still at the shore
And pockets don't know what it means to be poor
I can get through the wall if you give me a door
So I can leave something behind

Oh wisdom is lost in the trees somewhere
You're not going to find it in some mental gray hair
It's locked up from those who hurry ahead
And it's time to leave something behind

Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
When my son is a man he will know what I meant
I was just trying to leave something behind
I was just trying to leave something behind"
