Listening to Balsam Range's fast road beat "Any Old Road . . . " on the OTRA I thread led to this one from them, for the softer themes in this OTRA II thread:

"I'm only halfway home
I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find the things I have lost
I've come a long, long road
Still I've got miles to go
I've got a wide, wide river to cross"

RIP Dave Carter.

"Sigh, mournful sister, whisper and turn,
I will rattle like dry leaves when I go
Stand in the mist where my fire used to burn,
I will camp on the night breeze when I go."

Haven't been around much but have added a lot to my collection recently, found a good deal on the complete 8 disc Verve Duke Ellington & Ella Fitzgerald Cote D'Asur concerts recording which took place on the French Riviera in the summer of 1966.....needless to say at the time I was listening to stuff more along the Beatles line but have since come to appreciate Jazz. This number and a tropical drink in your hand guaranteed to send you off to the South Seas.....wait for the clave to come in...

And a nice newer one from Tracy, covering a great tune by Townes van Zandt, written in his sleep apparently!

Sorry that the audio is not better.

Thanks Brian for those great tunes. Funny, your 2 recent posts slipped right in between my 2 posts late on Monday, and I did not even see them until just now! . . . was ignoring you . . . sorry.

Have any trips to New Mexico planned this year?

Cheers,

Peter

Thumbs up

PS -- Speaking of New Mexico, this 2017 post of yours was almost 4 years ago!

Hi Peter, yes looking to head up to NM soon. I retired this year so can pretty much go when we want except for some mother in law issues we are having, my wife is the only one in her family that lives close to mom who is 95.

Don't know if you saw the Blaze Foley movie "Blaze" and I can't recall if there is any Lucinda Williams on the thread but she is one of my absolute favorite female artists, here she is doing her tribute to Blaze:

Too somber? Nah!

Cool -- Cheryl Wheeler -- "Northern Girl"

Heard this gem on WPKN overnight:

"Why are the rain clouds comin', pourin' down on me?
Why can't the north wind turn and blow the other way?
Where has the sunshine gone? Oh I can barely see,
This northern rain is fallin', and home is callin' me.

"Sun in a southern sky is all I need to see.
Watchin' a small bird fly, above the fields and me
Walkin' a dusty road and there's nothin' 'round the bend
Except those golden tones of goin' home again."

Wow . . .

Love that last tune by Cheryl Wheeler. Some songs are just meant for the road.

I found this one a couple years ago and it described what the road meant for me, especially when leaving a town and back out into the wide open. The part about millions of dreams coming true and sticking it out together resonated with me. It may seem millions of dreams coming true is far fetched but what if a dream is fulfilled and defined by a feeling that lasted just a day, an hour, or a minute? So yeah, I had millions of those.

Well said Jeff . . . exactly!

"Watchin' a stretch of road,
Miles of light explode
Driftin' off a thing
I'd never done before
Watchin' a crowd roll in
Out go the lights it begins
A feelin' in my bones
I never felt before . . .
. . .
Millions of dreams come real
A feelin' in my soul
I'd never felt before...mmmm"

Thanks for this great tune!

Peter

Cheryl Wheeler -- "Arrow"

Funny that you just mentioned Cheryl Wheeler, as I was about to post her more somber "Arrow" when I came here this afternoon.

[click on URL for Full Screen etc.]

"Arrow" starts at [0:45]

"I wish I could fall in love
Though it only leads to trouble, oh I know it does
Still I'd fool myself and gladly, just to feel I was
In love, in love
I wish I could feel my heartbeat rise
And gaze into some gentle, warm excited eyes
And give myself as truly as an arrow flies
In windless skies"

PS -- I looked all over for the lyrics, but had to transcribe them into WORD as this fine tune played . . . over and over of course . . . just a partial set of lyrics -- somber enough for you?

" 'Broken' would be the word that described her best
though she tried hard, not to let it show
unspoken were the words that could attest
to the reason why her mind just wouldn’t slow

With thoughts like speeding cars on 25
sometimes she was deafened from the sound
I’ve checked on her many many times
when the wind from the highway had knocked her down

There were times she came so close to bein’ free
to see her close her eyes, and look toward the sky
the pain from the past seemed to be
too deep for her not to wonder why
she lived her life like a desperate rogue
and fought hard not to go under
from the things she couldn’t get over"

What lyrics!

PS -- Posting here on the OTRA II thread because the theme -- breaking up with someone -- is a little somber for some.

Thanks Jeff for the reminder of this great S&G tune.
