Smile Nobody needs a hot water heater!!!

I knew I would get your attention with that statement.

We all need a water heater to heat cold water! I see no reason to heat hot water, therefore, "nobody needs a hot water heater".

In my business the appliance is properly called a water heater.

Boy, do I need to get a life! And you will too when you start correcting your friends and acquaintances.

Rick,
I guess the HOT water heater is kind of like the Department of Redundancy Department But we actually have had a hot water heater before...we had a water heater plumbed into our solar water heating system, and I would wager that the water running thru that water heater was HOT! BTW Cabin Fever setting in yet?

"Hot water heater" ... one of my pet peeves.

The other one is "orientated."

"Aaron's HOT WATER HEATER was ORIENTATED in such a fashion that the heated water from the solar panels was plumbed to it."

Rick, I agree and try not to make that mistake.

My own pet peeve is the use of good vs well. Things are good. Things are done well.

He's a good driver. He drives well, NOT he drives good.

Perhaps it's from NASCAR being widely televised, but this is probably the number one butchery of the English language in this country today. Ya done good, bubba!

Another is not using me and I properly with and. When in doubt, do the following.

Is it:

Jim and me went to the store.

or

Jim and I went to the store.

Drop the "Jim and" and it's easier to see.

Me went to the store.

or

I went to the store.

Is it:

These are for Jim and I.

or

These are for Jim and me.

Drop the "Jim and" and it's easier to see.

These are for I.

or

These are for me.

I guess I need a life too!

Nah, Moe... you're doin' fine! At the risk of alienating all of our friends who are NASCAR fans, whaddya think'll happen when ya turn a bunch o' 'shine runners loose on TV?

Now lemme see ifn's I's gots this straight...

"Me and Bubba done goned to da store fo' mo' beer so's we's can watch NASCAR on th' TV lata..."

Hey guys... is it Spring yet? I gotta get outta here!!!

More pet peeves

Lose vs. loose: Lose means you can no longer locate an item. Loose means the item can move around easily.

Examples:
I'm losing my mind. (correct)
I'm loosing my mind. (incorrect)

Lense: Not really relevant here, but as a photographer this bugs me. I see "lense" more often than "lens" on photography forums. I've given up trying to correct those people and now simply ignore their questions. If they aren't smart enough to look on the front of their cameras and see how to spell "lens" I'm not going to waste my time giving them advice.

Using apostrophes in plural words. This may be the most common mistake of all. C'mon people. This is third-grade spelling. Apostrophes denote the possessive form.

Examples:
Airstream's customer service is among the best in the industry. (correct)
I love the plastic interior's of 1970's Airstream's. (incorrect)

A heard a girl mentionthe other day, that she needed to go to an atm machine, and get some cash.

automatic teller machine machine???

Just fresh on my mind as something silly.

I guess we all need grammar check in here, or do I just need spell check?

Or in my business, a "NIC card". ("network interface card card")

Looks like there'll be no shortage of qualified contributors for the new magazine...or maybe just "editors". The Blue Beret could use a few, that's for sure...

don't get me started...

... as a longtime editor for one of the largest newspapers in the country, I could write a thesis on the misuses that drive me nuts, the mistakes that I grudgingly correct every day, the nuances we're losing ground on, and the battles that are flat-out lost....

Their, there, they're Moe,

They no longer teach Gramatical English in the schools. When I was coming through we were required to take one semester of Latin as part of our English education. Now with all of the "me first", ACLU type lawsuits it is amazing that any of the students learn anything. And given the quality of the young work force I have to deal with; I don't believe they have learned anything other than entitlement and how to get out of working. Okay, okay I'll get off my soapbox now.

Angry

The one that really blows me away is the incorrect usage of "a" and "an": I have a Airstream for sale, it's a '02 ('02 should be pronounced "oh-two", otherwise it should be written 2002, am I right?).
