I'm putting a rack in the back of my old pickup when my daughter has her first date..(hopefully a long time off) '75 dodge extended cab.... The boy can sit in the back on that side drop seat looking at my arsenal. And then the only words I will say to him is "get in and get out" Man being a dad is fun......

Thumbs down Just watch your rear end!

Dear Doorgunner,

Sure we can all joke around and make off color remarks, but let's be serious for a moment.

There is nothing funny about the heartbreak of "REAR END SEPARATION"

There, I said it.

That 32 footer of yours just can't take the extra load. Airstream, in its wisdom designed its frames right up to the limit.

By adding that Red Rider, the Pump action, and the Dana Magnum 350, you've increased the dynamic load, and that's if there unloaded. If you've got those babies loaded you're just begging for more trailer damage.

The dynamic load is what kills the trailer, not the static loads. In other words, 30lbs on the bumper in the cabbage patch is just 30lbs., Whoopdeeedo.

30lbs on the bumper speeding along on the "Farm to Market road"* hitting Cow pies is magnified by the acceleration.

So that 30lb static load could very easily be like a 300lb dynamic load hitting a BIG COW PIE. (could be more or less) Not only that, it gets repeated over and over and over.

Aluminum doesn't like fatigue loading either. So you hammer the thing apart.

I do believe that the frame and design could have been better. But this is the way they are.

As for a 50mm, the real problem is the handling. Several members have looked into
building a new frame that would absolutely not bend. However, the problem of handling still comes up. You want the mass to be centered just ahead of the axles. You put 350lbs on the back bumper and its 12' aft of the axle centerline. Every time you make a side to side oscillation, that weight out on the end is trying to wreck you.

Picture if you will, trying to dance the twist holding a 25lbs wheezier on the end of a willow stick vs. holding a 25lb wheezier in your hands,. WAY easier when the wheezier is firmly grasped in your hands, and much more polite.

It's called, "polar moment of inertia." You want the mass centralized.

In a rear bedroom layout, think twice about adding that fancy extra pillow. In a rear bathroom model, position the spare TP rolls over the axels.

So there you have it.

Just watch you rear end.

Michael

PS, nice photo

* 4 you city folks, roads designated FM, like FM395 are short for "Farm to Market road 395"
