Michigan State Parks Closing?

Michigan State Parks may be closing. Just as we wait to head out to see the colors in peak, there may be no parks to gain entry to. Hunting and fishing licenses will not be sold. No more cigarettes or alcohol can be brought in because tax stamps will no longer be issued. The casinos will close. No lottery tickets will be sold. No driver's licesenses or tags will be issued. 3 days and counting. Dust off those courtesy parking spots. Michiganders heading towards a location near you.

Governor urges Lansing to avert shutdown

Unhappy Look on the DNR web page

DNR - Department of Natural Resources

Right at the main home page there is a big notice that tomorrow morning everything goes down. Everybody gets kicked out of the parks, forest campgrounds, and access sites. Online sales of licenses will continue until the server hiccups, then no more.

What a bummer for those with campground reservations.

Michigan quandary

The Governor along with other Democrats want more taxes, (e.g. 6% on haircuts plus more income tax, etc.)

The Republicans insist on balancing the budget with spending cuts.

This has been going on for about 3 months, so it will be another few days. The private camp grounds are open of course and the price difference isn't that much any more.

With any luck this will push Michigan into a part time legislature or a unicameral system or maybe both. Can't be any worse than the current system!

Carol, here's hoping the state stays "open" and also the parks and recreation areas. That could really throw the wrench in families' plans for heading out for fall foliage trips. Gypsy is all packed and provisioned. We are heading out early tomorrow up Hwy 61 to the Arrowhead of Minnesota--hoping the trees are aflame. We've never taken the northern Mississippi River route to St. Paul so this should be fun. Best wishes on your fall travels. See you at the Can Opener! ~G

Well if they don't get this resolved by their cut off time at midnight tonight, the legislators, there will be plenty of parking/camping spaces in downtown Lansing because none of the state employees are going to work. That's really great news for Michigan. I don't like the thought of having no government services or reduced police coverage.

Its really upsetting, this has never happened here before. Two of my brothers, who work for the state, will not be getting paid, not eligible for unemployment for this hiatus, nor earning time towards retirement, etc. til this mess is sorted out.

We are headed out tomorrow too. We drive to Ludington and dry camp in the lot for the ferry instead of the campground, then Tuesday morning we sail out of Michigan to Wisconsin. It's Door county for the colors this year for us. We had planned on going up to the UP to Taquamenon Falls and the Porkies. Lake in the Clouds should be gorgeous right now. Have a good trip to Minnesota and see you in Florida, G!

Hey Gen, I like your thinking we could have a giant camp "in".

Steph, sorry to hear that. I know so many more people and businesses will be hurt beyond just camping. I hope there is an upturn soon.

Rodney's Point!

Our fair governor (previous one) chose to close down our DMV in order to "balance the budget". Lying crook. Can you imagine a worse infliction of pain to anyone who needed to title a vehicle or get any number of things done? Lines out the wazoo - early morning, lunchtime, etc. Didn't cost the bas**** and some more ***** a darn thing.

Oh - turns out that we had the biggest surplus ever, after the tax increase passed. Lying ***** (*** every one of them.

The problem is our economy. The automakers have had a huge economic impact and recovery will be a challenge here regardless of politics. There's just not enough revenue. No more glory days for Detroit. I think I read over 300,000 retired government workers and teachers on pensions and unemployment is high. Health care is climbing. I imagine the aging of America will be rearing its head in quite a few places and not just Michigan. Downsizing is prevalent. Lots of homes for sale. Lots of job and pay and benefit cuts.

When ever we have these situations, either on a state basis or a national basis (Remember not long ago our national congress nearly shut down the country because of not creating a budget) don't you ever wonder why this can happen. I'm just an ordinary fellow. I have a check book, credit cards, some money in the bank and yes things get tight. I can't afford a lot of the things I think I need or want. My wife and I talk things over, sometimes she wants things that I don't and vice a versa. Were married, we respect each other and try to understand our individual needs so we come to a common consensus. We don't go to bed mad. we don't cheat our children or freinds by being vindictive with finances. But that is what happens in our government. It shouldn't matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican. What matters is the public good and the good graces of your constituents which the government of Michigan is ignoring right now in order to do some political infighting. We will get over it. Granholm has no more influence on this situation than any other politician. If you are Michigan resident look at the candidates on the next ballot very carefully. Take a close look at what they really accomplished versus campaign promises and vote accordingly. Myself, if I want to use my Airstream during this "crisis" it is very easy to drive right out of the state to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois or points south.

Wheel Interested,

I feel your pain.

Our previous Gov closed state parks, etc. to get a 10% increase in the state sales tax. It worked and now they have surpluses that Nashville is blowing out their you know what.

Your situation is much worse than ours. Job losses in private industry, everything is organized, unionized, professionalized, governmentized, groupized. You support me and I will support you. The poor guy who is not in a group is getting killed. When all the groups get done getting theirs, there is nothing left to run the state.

My kids are in Ohio, not much different.

The same groups down here are trying to get the state income tax so they can live off the government.

The company I retired from sells 20Billion in goods & services and at the end of the year there is no money left(no net profit) but, the demands made on it
are never ending.

Well, at the last minute, just before sunrise, they worked out a deal--for 30 days. Everybody goes back to work, for now. We'll see if there will be a rude Halloween surprise.
