It's Veteran's Day weekend and I found this post on another forum that I visit. Take the time to read the comments and if you chose, sign the petition. I did....

I don't know how many on here have ever watched HBO's Band of Brothers, but if you haven't shame on you! You need to go out and rent or buy it today. For those who have seen the true story then Major Winters is a familiar name. He lead Easy Company through the D-Day campaign. There is an effort to get this amazing man the MoH before its too late and I believe he deserves it. If you agree then please sign the petition. I didn't just sign it for him (though he more then deserves it) but for all the veterans of our greatest generation who we owe so much to, including Private 1st Class Linwood Huffstetler (my late grandfather and hero). We are losing more and more of these greatest Americans and if you know a vet of any war but especially a WWII vet thank him (or her) personally and by helping Maj. Winters get his MoH. Support our Veterans!- Medal of Honor for Major Richard D. Winters Petition

If any man ever deserved it, Dick Winters does. The problem is that he was already awarded the Legion of Merit for his (their) actions against that artillery battery on D-day. That doesn’t mean that the award can’t be “upgraded”, but it’s a bit of a hard sell. The other qualifications that must be met are that 2 living witnesses to the action must be able to testify to the actions on that day and that intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty were met. Gaurnier and Babe are still alive, as are other members of the unit. Again, I think, any objective review of the circumstances of the actions of the leadership if Lt. Winters on D-day would meet all of the qualifications. The problem these days is “selling” it. Sad isn’t it? In reality, all it would take is a single member of Congress taking this on as a task to complete and it would happen.
If you watched Band of Brothers all the way thru to the end, Dick Winters volunteered to go to the Pacific Theater after the European war ended. General Gavin (I think I have the facts straight here), commander of the 101st Airborne, basically told him that he had done “enough”.
One of his men, in the outtakes that begin each episode of Band of Brothers, used the simple line “he was a real soldier”. I can think of no greater praise for anybody that has ever worn the uniform.
Thanks for passing this on to the forum. We owe our freedom to travel to men like Major Winters. They are all heros in my book, but no doubt some have gone way beyond hero, and Major Winters is one of them.
He has my signature and my thanks.
John
